Description:
Hooks Meng & Clement is looking for an efficient, organized Legal Assistant to help our attorneys assist clients and ensure we’re operating efficiently. You’ll assist with the preparation of legal documents and handle all office correspondence including answering phone calls and emails and reminding the team of upcoming deadlines. Hooks Meng & Clement counsel and defend employers, insurers, third-party administrators, and others in the areas of Workers’ Compensation, subrogation, occupational safety and health, subsequent injury, and related matters. We protect and empower clients by successfully navigating the constant challenges on a sea of complex, arcane statutes and regulations we call Industrial Relations Law. Our office specializes in Workers’ Compensation Insurance Defense, OSHA Employer Representation, Subrogation, Subsequent Injury, and Industrial Insurance Litigation. $50,000 yearlyResponsibilities:
- Ensure client billing is processed properly using daily time records with assistance from the accounting department
- Perform legal research, as needed, with help from attorneys and paralegals
- Manage office correspondence and administrative tasks such as answering phone calls, communicating with opposing attorney offices, taking dictation, responding to emails, and reminding the team of upcoming deadlines
- Work with attorneys and paralegals to create various legal documents, including pleadings, motions, subpoenas, affidavits, contracts, and briefs for case preparation, and proofread documents when requested
- Conduct legal research, when necessary, with guidance from attorneys and paralegals
- Accept other administrative tasks as needed to assist the team and ensure the firm runs smoothly
- Responsible for supporting attorneys by performing a variety of administrative duties
- Strong communication skills are required for frequent interaction with court personnel, opposing counsel, and clients
- The candidate must be detail-oriented
- Have strong organizational skills
- Able to work as part of a team
- Able to prioritize work effectively
Qualifications:
- Must be able to prioritize tasks with demanding deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
- High school diploma or equivalent is required; associate’s degree is a plus
- Must be able to type at least 50 WPM
- Some knowledge of legal software, case management, and docketing programs
- Applicants must have excellent communication skills and organizational skills
- Experience in the legal industry is highly desired
- An Associate’s degree or some college is preferred; a high school diploma or equivalent is necessary
- Candidates must have worked with legal software, case management, and docketing programs
- Organizational skills and communication skills are necessary for this position
- Familiarity with legal documents and terminology
- Strong customer service, personal, and communication skills
- We expect you to be proficient in the use of standard office software including email and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
- As we are largely paperless, you will need to understand how to work in a digital environment with PDFs and other digital file formats
- Able to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines
- Courteous and professional demeanor
- Able to work as a team with attorneys
- A valid driver’s license is required
