Description:
As a legal assistant, you will be tasked with a variety of duties to support the in-house lawyers at Settlement Housing Fund in all aspects of developing and maintaining affordable housing in New York City, including drafting documents, incorporating entities, reviewing documents of record, preparing signatures, tracking the receipt and filing of litigation documents, and maintaining and organizing files.
Legal Assistant Job Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assist with drafting and reviewing transactional documents
- Create limited liability companies and corporations, including preparation and filing of formation documents
- Order copies of corporate formation documents and good standing certificates
- Prepare and coordinate execution of signature pages
- Track and assemble closing documents
- Assist attorneys with pre-closing, closing and post-closing matters
- Track receipt and filing of litigation documents
- Search public legal records and databases
- Draft and proofread correspondence
- Maintain and organize hard copy and digital files
- Notarize documents
- Assist with training interns
- Other duties as assigned
Legal Assistant Skills and Qualifications
- Associates degree in related field required, bachelors Degree in related field preferred
- 1+ year related experience
- Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to proofread material for spelling and grammatical errors
- Ability to manage variable workload and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, and other computer applications as needed
- Become notary public within 6 months of employment (if not a notary public already)
