Description:
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
The Legal Counsel position requires 3-6 years of PQE from in-house or private practice, along with relevant qualifications. Excellent communication and analytical skills are necessary for the role as internal consultant to senior management. Success in the role depends on being insightful, proactive, collaborative, and comfortable with ambiguity.
- Ability to establish credibility and respect with a diverse group of collaborators from various departments and organizations
- Be persuasive yet credible in communication style, able to influence others
- Clearly understands legal and government processes, interactions, and constraints
- Critical thinking including an ability to handle a large volume of information and simplify complex situations and synthesise, communicate, and present
- Identifying potential constraints on the business in complex situations and developing strategies to address them, gain advantage, or mitigate.
Responsibilities:
WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Provide legal counsel for marketing, procurement, and HR, ensuring compliance with local law and internal policy.
Develop legal priorities and procedures to ensure an internal environment in which the South Pacific businesses understand and meet their legal obligations and ensure adequate reputation management.
Drive business conduct and compliance to embed a culture of “Delivery with Integrity”:
- Roll out governance and compliance initiatives shared by the Group, Region or Area;
- monitor compliance to align with relevant legislation and internal governance standards;
- provide specialist advice on policies and procedures;
- implement and conduct appropriate training sessions on legal and compliance matters;
- Direct or lead on external (e.g. regulatory) and internal investigations (e.g. those under BAT’s SOBC) appropriately.
- Build a professional & collaborative culture within the South Pacific Leadership Teams, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs teams and the wider businesses.
- Ensure relevant stakeholders at global, regional, APMEA South and end market levels are appropriately engaged on key legal priorities and arising issues.
- Develop strong relationships with external counsel and external consultants to ensure the best provision of advice to the businesses.
