Job Description
We are thrilled to offer a unique and exciting opportunity for a skilled and driven lawyer to join the in-house legal team at Minor Hotels. Based in our Brisbane CBD Corporate Office and reporting to the General Counsel, with some supervision from our Senior Counsel, this role provides an exceptional pathway to advance your in-house legal career within a global organisation, headquartered in Queensland.
As part of a collaborative and high-performing legal team of 6, as the 7th member of the team you will play a pivotal role in supporting our rapidly expanding operations. You will be the 4th practicing lawyer in the team and will have the support and mentorship of 3 senior lawyers (with varying levels of seniority), making this role and exceptional opportunity to grow and learn in a supported environment.

Preferably you will have some in-house legal experience, but we are also welcome private practice lawyers with a background in the following areas: property, hotel, corporate, commercial, or litigation law.

Responsibilities:
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role is varied and no day will likely be the same! The team works on various matters including large acquisitions, both large and minor disputes and complaints, managing regulatory investigations, overseeing legal compliance, contract reviews, general legal advice, franchising law, hotel management agreements, management rights advices, HR matters, privacy matters, intellectual property protection and various other advices.
Some of the role’s key responsibilities include:
- Providing general legal advice, recommendations, and support to key internal departments, including the Hotels (65+ properties), Leadership Team, Executive Committee, Finance Team and Commercial Departments.
- Undertaking legal work, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of corporate and commercial contracts, sponsorship agreements, software contracts, and hotel agreements.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating Hotel Management Agreements (HMAs), property leases, and Franchise Agreements.
- Supporting the legal team in managing purchase or sale agreements for new and existing hotels.
- Preparing, renewing, varying and assigning MLR Agreements, Leases, HMAs, and Franchise Agreements.
- Providing advice and recommendations on General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and privacy legislation.
- Assisting with disputes and litigation from time to time.
- Keeping the General Counsel informed about legal or compliance issues.
Qualifications
TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL BRING THE SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- A completed Bachelor’s degree in Law.
- Admission to practice as a solicitor in Queensland (as a minimum) and possession of a current practicing certificate in Australia (or the ability to obtain one before you commence).
- Minimum 2 years of post-admission experience (either in an in-house setting or in a medium to large private law firm). Candidates with experience in property law, hotel law, corporate law, commercial law, or litigation will be considered favourably.
- Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with executives, managers, staff, external lawyers, and regulatory bodies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and an ability to learn and use new technology.
- Exceptional planning and organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- A proactive and eager attitude to grow your career in an in-house legal team.
- An ability to travel to the Sunshine Coast on a fortnightly basis for meetings with the Sunshine Coast office.
