The Opportunity
Our Litigation and Employment Law team is looking to add an #EnergyProblemSolver in Calgary to support the evolving needs of our business. Reporting to the Director, Litigation and Employment Law, this position will have a primary focus of supporting the litigation team. The successful candidate will work with internal stakeholders, as well as internal and external legal resources to provide legal advice related to risk and litigation matters.
Work may include advising on and conducting a wide variety of litigation and arbitration matters, including complex commercial, landowner, employment, insurance, and contractual disputes. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing pre-claim advice, responding to demand letters and negotiating settlements related to claims, initiating and defending claims, providing drafting advice regarding dispute-related clauses in commercial agreements to the commercial team and other tasks. The successful candidate will have significant court experience and would be able to assist with and at times lead mediations, arbitrations and trial.
What you’ll do
- Advise on litigation risks to the Company
- Run files from claim initiation through discovery and potentially to trial, including drafting pleadings, managing document discovery and conducting questioning
- Support senior members of the group in all legal matters related to litigation, including mediation, arbitration and trial
- Manage external counsel on more complex litigation files throughout Canada and at times, the U.S.
- Research and draft memos on various legal issues
- Manage legal budgets
- Provide support to the broader Litigation and Employment Law group as required
- Other tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Law degree from a Canadian law school or an ABA accredited law school required
- Minimum 6-8 years of related legal experience, particularly litigation experience
- Membership to the Alberta Bar
- Expertise with federally-regulated and/or multi-jurisdictional corporations would be an asset.

- This position takes a turn at carrying an emergency pager and responding to Emergency Centre call-outs.
