This is professional legal land survey and engineering survey supervisory field and office work. An incumbent of this class conducts all types of legal surveys including: city land sub-divisions, road dedication and road closing, re-posting, and right-of-way surveys; conducts topographical surveys for design applications, bench mark control levelling, and ground control work for aerial photo surveys. A Legal Land Surveyor calculates independently and/or checks the calculations of others regarding areas, curves, traverse closures, and other technical and mathematical calculations pertaining to surveying projects. Supervises, assigns, and reviews the work of a small crew engaged in field work and the drafting of plans; checks finished plans for accuracy and completeness; directs Land Title Office searches for data on previous surveys; and certifies finished survey prior to registration at the Land Title Office. Other responsibilities include providing technical information and assistance regarding survey standards, and related requirements, procedures and records to Engineering consultants, the public and internal departments such as Planning and Engineering; and making recommendations regarding the development, alteration or refinement of surveying and related drafting methods, procedures and techniques to better meet City requirements. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of a 2 year diploma course in survey technology from a recognized Institute of Technology or University graduation in a related discipline, plus sound experience as a land surveyor-in-training; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of land surveying; of the policies, procedures, practices, rules and regulations governing the surveying of various legal survey projects in the City; and knowledge of the provisions of the Land Title Act and other statutes and regulations governing the practice of land surveying in British Columbia. An incumbent will have sound knowledge of computer assisted drafting standards, requirements and techniques; ability to perform the instrument work and to direct the work of a small crew of survey assistants. Ability to write comprehensive field survey notes and to draft sub-division plans from them; to make accurate mathematical computations of land areas from angular and linear measurements; and to proposed sub-division plans according to established regulations and procedures. A Legal Land Surveyor will have the ability to operate a variety of equipment; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with and to provide technical surveying information to internal and external contacts; ability to walk long distances and to work outdoors in adverse weather and have skill in the use and care of modern surveying instruments and equipment. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia and Commissioned British Columbia Land Surveyor are required.
