Description:

The Royal Yachting Association, based in Hamble, near Southampton, is the national governing body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating. It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft.

    The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legal Manager to join our newly created Legal Governance and Integrity Department. This is an exciting opportunity to manage and oversee the legal aspects of the RYA Advisory Service, a key benefit offered to our personal and organisational members.
    The post holder will be responsible for providing legal input for the RYAs advisory service, including developing guidance, addressing questions, and conducting training. They will report to the Head of Legal, and will be responsible for overseeing other members of the advisory team, along with external advisers, and may be asked to assist with broader RYA-related legal issues.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Legal qualification entitling the practice of law in the UK.
  • Post-qualification experience in relevant legal fields.
  • Experience managing a diverse workload.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively present key legal issues to stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory: Provide and oversee legal advice for RYA members and affiliates on boating-related issues. Offer guidance on dispute resolution, liability, property, constitutional, employment, and corporate matters.
  • Research and Guidance: Conduct research on legal issues, monitor changes in laws, and communicate updates through articles, guidance notes, and presentations. Develop and maintain template legal documents.
  • Leadership: Oversee and motivate members of the RYAs Legal Team. Work with other RYA experts to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive advisory service.
  • Collaboration: Work with other departments, sports organisations, and entities on matters of mutual interest. Assist in lobbying activities and respond to consultations.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Track usage of the legal advice service, monitor legislation affecting boating, and report trends to the Head of Legal.
