JOB INFORMATION
Post No. FL004A - Legal Services Manager
We are looking for a Legal Services Manager to lead our busy in-house Legal Services Team.
Proactive and self-motivated, the successful candidate will have a good understanding of how local government works and be able to demonstrate a track record as an effective manager. Our Legal Services Team is committed and enthusiastic and your role will be to support them in delivering the best outcomes for the Council and the people of Newport. In doing this, you will develop strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders and work alongside them to deliver on the Council’s priorities.
An accomplished lawyer with previous experience of local government legal practice, you will have a key role to play by supporting the Head of Law and Standards in delivering legal advice on a range of strategic matters, which will often be complex and sometimes high-profile. You will have a good eye for detail and an ability to understand the issues at the heart of a matter; you will also be innovative and a good problem-solver. The ability to understand risk is crucial but so is the desire to embrace transformation and new ways of working.
As the Council’s Deputy Monitoring Officer, you will be responsible for working with the Monitoring Officer to ensure the highest standards of governance and in supporting elected members and senior officers to make sound and well-informed decisions.
This position is an excellent opportunity to develop your local government career in a challenging but supportive environment at a forward-thinking council.
Further details can be found in the job description for the role. For an informal discussion, please contact Mike Wallbank, Head of Law and Standards, at Mike.Wallbank@newport.gov.uk. No agencies.
The closing date for applications is 16th February 2025.
We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.
Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role.
Newport City Council is not currently supporting applicants with sponsorship for right to work. In applying for a vacancy, applicants should already have the right to work in the UK.
