Description:

Position Purpose and Summary
The Library Technician: Collections, Reference and Borrower Services oversees the maintenance of the physical resource collection in the library, including weeding projects, shelf shifting, and shelf reading and inventory. The position also provides technical assistance to librarians for certain LibGuides, the Electronic Resources Management module, institutional repository, and research data management software. The position is also responsible for overseeing the collection of e-resource statistics. The position also provides general circulation assistance to patrons at the Borrower Services desk.
Key Areas of Accountability

Collection Maintenance

  • Create, implement, and evaluate collection maintenance programs.
  • Oversee regular shelf reading/inventory routines.
  • Monitor shelving accuracy, in liaison with Borrower Services Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with librarians and technical services staff on weeding of the collection.
  • Plan and implement collection shifts.
  • Create and maintain collection-related signage.
  • Monitor condition and placement of furniture in study areas.

Reference Services

  • Under the direction of the reference librarians:
  • Develop and maintain assigned information guides using the Libguides platform. Tasks include, but are not limited to, link checking, making suggestions for updates, and guide design.
  • Maintain and verify data in the Electronic Resources Module, including, but not limited to, licensing, access, and contact information.
  • Assist with basic maintenance duties in the institutional repository.
  • Assist with the maintenance and occasional development of RDM-related software and infrastructure.
  • Collect and report electronic resources usage statistics.

Borrower Services

Under the direction of the Borrower Services Supervisor:

  • Manage and maintain the highest standards of customer service.
  • Charge, discharge, and renew all library materials.
  • Create and maintain patron records.
  • Oversee collection of fees and fines for overdue, lost, or damaged materials.
  • Resolve user problems and handle sensitive departmental communications and student/faculty information.
  • Provide patron assistance with basic computer and printing functions.
  • Liaise with Borrower Services Supervisor to review and maintain accurate signage and wayfinding in the building.
  • In absence of Borrower Services Supervisor and/or Evening Supervisor, supervise Borrower Services regular staff and student employees.

Other duties may be required or assigned as library priorities and initiatives change.

STANDARDS & REQUIREMENTS

Education: Recognized Library Technician diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution.
Experience: 1 – 2 years’ library experience required, preferably in an academic library.
