Position Description Summary/Purpose:
The Library Technician is a part-time role primarily focused on providing superior customer service to patrons within the Library. The Library Technician will work on a mostly afternoon, evening and weekend schedule over 12 months. The part-time Library Technician will work as part of a team of staff to provide Information Desk services within a cutting edge, technology leading, Learning Commons Model of service. Duties include provision of services for students and faculty including the circulation and printing functions and providing backup services for the media delivery function.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities:

  • Answers Questions in-person, by telephone, and virtually.
  • Assist students with printing and scanning and providing refunds when necessary.
  • Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning by enforcing Library policies.
  • Checks material out/in including laptops, and resolves fines and fees, communicating with library reference staff when necessary.
  • Assist in collaboration/study room reservations.
  • Close 4th floor prior to completing shift.
  • Keeps library administration informed of patron issues and all off peak activity in the library.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by the library administration.
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.

Other Functions:

  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office, library databases and online searching.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to establish good working relationships with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to work with ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies required.
  • Excellent communication skills, including speaking to groups and instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in customer service, be flexible, and acquire new skills.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • The qualifications required would generally be acquired with a High School Diploma or at least one year of college experience using databases or any equivalent combination of education, work experience and training.
