BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of Recreation, Physical Education, and/or Gerontology (or a closely related field).
  • Experience facilitating a variety of programs in a seniors environment is essential.
  • Has proficient computer skills (i.e. Word and Excel).
  • Has a valid provincial driver’s license or is willing to obtain one in order to drive the company vehicle.
  • Smart Serve certification required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as written and verbal fluency in English is required.

Responsibilities:

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

In conjunction with the life enrichment manager, the life enrichment supervisor plans, organizes, and implements programs to enhance the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual development of the residents. Contributes to establishing new methods and policies in regards to improving leisure lifestyle and promoting positive and active retirement living.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively participates in, and contributes to, the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) program.
  • Takes initiative to grow current programs and to develop new programs.
  • Maintains an awareness of resident needs and opportunities available to them.
  • Promotes resident awareness and participation in leisure programs.
  • Maintains appropriate department records including attendance, community contact information, and program evaluations.
  • Maintains effective communication and good relations with residents, families, and staff through appropriate lines of communication and respecting confidentiality.
  • Develops and upgrades knowledge and skills in leisure programming.
  • Attends in-service programs.
    Specific Duties

Planning:

  • Sets up activity area for each program
  • Prepares supplies for activities (i.e. preparing the crossword for the Crossword Challenge, researching activities, exercise programs, community events, etc.)
  • Updates the monthly birthday list and prepares birthday cards for each month
  • Assists in planning and production of monthly calendar
  • Generates ideas for new activities
  • Distributes event advertising in the community

Activation:

  • Sets up and takes down program supplies and room requirements
  • Ensures adequate supplies for both staff-led and independent activities (movies, popcorn and other snacks)
  • Implements activity programs
  • Invites residents to programs via telephone, during other program, visits or invitations
  • Ensures all programs start on time and a Plan B is always at hand (especially on the 2nd floor)
  • With the assistance from the life enrichment manager, assesses and evaluates programs (through the canvassing committee, program audits and evaluations)
  • Accompanies on weekly outings
  • Decorates activity area for holidays and special events when needed
  • Records attendance at each activity and event
  • Delivers calendar and newsletter when necessary

Administrative:

  • Types monthly recreational meeting minutes
  • Ensures all posters are correct and up-to-date including daily events, special events, notices
  • Sign-up sheets for outings, staff involvement and CQI
  • Assists in preparing the monthly newsletter
  • Other printing jobs.
  • Complies with all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required annual mandatory training/education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and W.H.M.I.S. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
