LINC Instructor - Evening (Part Time, Contract)

Salary: $31.05/hour -$37.40/hour
Start Date: October 31st, 2024

End Date: March 31, 2025

  • The successful candidate will teach a CLB 4 class, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 6:00pm – 9:00pm, in-person

What qualifications are we looking for?
At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:
Completed Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language, Languages, or Education
TESL/TESOL/ESL Certificate is an asset
Awareness of the PBLA system of assessment, PBLA Certification is an asset
Teaching experience required; PBLA teaching experience is an asset
Willingness and commitment to certify PBLA through online training
Awareness of and empathy for issues facing new Canadians,
Current knowledge of LINC/ESL and resources,
Superior communication and leadership skills,
The ability to work independently and as part of a team,
Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John’s Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search,
Three professional references.
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?
LINC Instructors will:
Be a champion of the 4 core Y values of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility,
Start and end classes on time as per class schedule,
Use the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) guidelines as a tool in the creation
and execution of lessons,
Responsible for the submission and accuracy of all required paperwork including, but
not limited to progress reports, end of term reports, success stories, tracking forms,
attendance forms, maintaining up to date instructor binder, etc.
Maintain records of previous lessons and submit classroom/lesson reports,
Assess individual student needs; address student problems as necessary; monitor classroom activities and dynamics,
Conduct mid and end of term conferences with individual students,
Provide new students with a portfolio orientation,
Prepare PBLA binders for new students and help them organize their binders,
Have regular check ins with Supervisor,
Participate in the PBLA review and YMCA performance evaluations as directed,
Participate in professional development sessions, events and staff meetings,
Complete and recertify the YMCA trainings
Keep all professional certifications up to date.
Prepare and deliver interesting, relevant and meaningful lessons in English language and Canadian culture to adult newcomers to Canada based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks and needs of the students.
Maintain records of previous lessons, researching and utilizing a variety of teaching resources.
Ensure activities are developing the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Perform assessments of students’ progress on a regular basis (using student portfolios); introduce new activities and materials to enhance student learning.
Maintain accurate student records of attendance and portfolios.
Maintain up-to-date instructor binder and submit attendance sheets daily
Submit lesson reports monthly
Attend quarterly Professional Development days
The LINC instructors are part of the Community YMCA team and report to the LINC Supervisor.
