SUMMARY:

The role of the Literacy Specialist is to support the implementation of the After School & Summer Youth Program literacy curriculum. Specialist will focus on fulfilling grant measures for literacy by managing curriculum, lessons, reading assessments, and managing literacy learning software. The literacy specialist will work with the ASP director and coordinator, volunteers, and community partners to research, develop, implement, and facilitate various educational activities that promote literacy, positive personal development, cultural enrichment, and to engage and support students between the ages of 5 to 17 and their families in the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong background in working with children and youth a must; preferred to be studying or have obtained an education degree and/or 1 year work experience
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for more than 3 hours.
  • Must be able to walk 2-3 hours during work hours.

License and Credentials

  • Reliable transportation

  • Valid vehicle insurance
  • Must have a clean driving record

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Program planning and facilitation experience an asset
  • Ability to work with children in a respectful and empowering manner
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Strong community outreach and public relations skills and ability to liaise with community partners and leaders
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed
  • Must have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Travel requirements for the position includes 20% local and 0% overnight.

Responsibilities:



    • Assist in developing, execution, and evaluating program curriculum in literacy.

    • Group supervision of youth with attention to the following: program goals, literacy, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development
    • Promote program and activities in the broader community with some targeted outreach
    • Maintain appropriate records and statistics, and complete reports and evaluations as per guidelines
    • Create open lines of communication between parents and program staff
    • Assist sign in/out of students App
    • Assist with drink/snack/food stock utilizing San Antonio Food Bank donations
    • Manage supplies and organize daily activities.
    • Promote youth participation in all classroom teaching and activities.
    • Exhibit personal habits, health, dress, speech, table etiquette, manners, and relationships with other staff that serve as a beneficial model to youth
    • Other duties as assigned
