Description:

L’Arche Ottawa is seeking an energetic, compassionate individual who is willing to share life alongside individuals with and without developmental disabilities. Successful applicants will belong to a community setting, learn new skills, and develop meaningful relationships.
Working under the direction of the House Leader and in conjunction with the House Team, the Live-Out Assistant will provide appropriate support to the home and core members (individuals with intellectual disabilities). We cook and dine together, enjoy socializing with friends, participate in neighborhood activities, and frequently celebrate special moments. Through friendship and relationships with core members, the Live-Out House Assistant will gain valuable life skills and opportunities for personal growth and leadership. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree/Diploma in Developmental Services or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Key personal traits for success in this role include creativity, flexibility, a keen attention to detail, strong time management, and a sense of responsibility.
  • We will provide training for First Aid & CPR, Medication Administration, Crisis Prevention and Intervention, as well as orientation to specific personal care routines & disabilities. Formation in relationship building, vision and mission is provided through the L’Arche Leadership Development Program.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office and Outlook proficiently.
  • Criminal reference check (vulnerable sector).
  • Able to move/lift 50lbs.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and/or French.
  • Valid G driver’s license.
    Salary: Based on L’Arche Canada’s Compensation Policy. Starting at $47, 646 per year, based on previous experience, skills, and education. As a full time employee, your will be entitled to the Group Insurance benefits including life, dependent life, basic and occupational Accidental Death or Dismemberment (AD&D), Extended Health Coverage (EHC), Long Term Disability (LTD) as well L’Arche’s Employee Assistant Program (EAP) and the group retirement saving plan (RRSP).

    Position: Live-Out House Assistant

Responsibilities:

This is a position without a fixed schedule. Assistants are scheduled in the home 40 hours per week and have two days away per week. Applicants must be available to be in the home a variety of days, evenings and weekends.

Daily rhythm and responsibilities are much like in any household where members of the household require support:

  • Assisting Core Members with their daily activities and routines (personal care, toileting, cooking, cleaning, etc.)
  • Supporting Core Members in adhering to medical professionals’ guidance, including administering medication, attending appointments, assisting with physiotherapy, and managing challenging behaviors.
  • Develop a positive, supportive, and mutual relationship with core members through sharing daily life together, which respects their history, choices, goals and needs.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure that the physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, recreational, health and safety needs of core members are met while maximizing their choices and participation in the decisions affecting their lives.
  • Household chores; gardening, cleaning, laundry among others.
