Description:

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Good communication skills; Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of different communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through strong active listening skills.
  • Physically in shape: The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus
  • Ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Must have the ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow direction and procedures and work independently with flexible work habits, attitude, and adaptability *Good organizational, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, time constraints and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Valid BC Driver’s license and have their own method of transportation (can’t rely on rides).
  • Clean record (attendance, and warnings)

Responsibilities:

  • Execute railcar moves according to supervisor’s (or Operations Manager) instructions and according to the company SOP’s.
  • Follow company safety policies, track safety policies and WorkSafeBC policies.
  • Perform daily inspection sheets.
  • Perform visual and safety inspections of the equipment.
  • Maintain the appearance of the equipment, proper air pressure, proper fluid levels, and performs minor repairs, as needed
  • Assist with coupling and de-coupling of rail cars and loading
  • Timely and correct switching and placement of rail cars.
  • Operation of hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, etc.
  • Control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern.
  • Apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment.
  • Handling air hoses, wheel chocks, coupling and uncoupling of rail cars.
  • Responsible to communicate well with local railroad while moving rail cars in the switch yard
  • Other duties as assigned.
