EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent is required as a minimum
- Experience performing utility locates would be an considered an asset
- Valid “G” driver’s licence for province of Ontario
- Experience reading and using engineering/surveying drawings
Qualifications considered significant assets:
Previous experience in any of the below is considered an asset but not mandatory as training is provided:
- Certification as a Damage Prevention Technician
- Experience working around underground utilities i.e., locating or installing
- Training and/or certification in confined space entry, traffic control and electrical awareness
- Successful completion of a 2 or 3 year Technology program at an accredited college or university
- Experience using GPS and GPR equipment (such as Leica)
- Experience/ability using GIS software tools (such as ESRI) and or AutoCAD
- Experience performing private utility locates
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Inspection and Support, and as part of the Utilities Kingston Engineering Department, the Locator will provide services for locating the underground infrastructure for water, sewer, gas, fibre, and electric utilities within the City of Kingston’s distribution areas. This includes working with customers, contractors, and Utilities Kingston crews by providing reliable and accurate utility locates. Responsibilities include ensuring that information found in the field is accurate and recorded on field sketches. The incumbent will assist in other utility related investigations and duties (i.e., water leaks, sewer safety inspections etc.) and updating drawings electronically.
We are looking for entry level individuals with 1 to 3 years experience in locating underground infrastructure, someone who is self-motivated, can work independently with minimum direction, or in a team. Proficient use of Microsoft O365 Office suite, and other software programs such as ESRI/ AutoCAD, Locate Access or similar program. Strong Communication skills, both oral and written. Strong organizational skills, including efficiency with administrative duties and completion of the required forms and records is also required. Reliability, Integrity, accuracy, and effective interpersonal skills to work well with others, contractors and the general public are also a must.
