DESCRIPTION

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Location - This role is in-person with multiple UofA sites at North Campus, Edmonton, Campus Saint-Jean, Edmonton and South Campus, Edmonton.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Locksmith is required by law to be security-audited and registered with the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. This position is charged with the responsibility of providing a safe and secure environment for the University Community at large. The journeyperson locksmith provides continuous service (including the participation in standby on a rotating basis) ensuring that all emergency situations such as lost or stolen keys, break-ins, insecure doors, vandalism, etc., are dealt with in a timely manner. In addition to providing these services, it is the responsibility of the Locksmith to manage and maintain high-security keying systems for private organizations affiliated with the University of Alberta.
Locksmiths install, adjust and repair locks, make keys, and change lock combinations. They work on residential and institutional locksets and door hardware. Locksmiths may also install and maintain more sophisticated security systems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 High School diploma or equivalent
  • A certified Journeyperson certificate (in Alberta) required
  • Minimum 4 or more years of practical related industry experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Locksmith Apprentice (3rd Year) may be considered
  • Working knowledge of institutional or commercial electronic locking systems
  • Familiarity with computer systems and basic computer skills
  • Strong verbal communication and a courteous manner in dealing with customers and the public

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize workload while ensuring quality service is delivered to our clients and departments
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment. Knowledge of the University of Alberta campus is an asset
  • High level of proficiency with Google applications

Responsibilities:

  • Service and repair all door hardware and record any changes made for each door opening.
  • Verify door numbers against plan numbers, make necessary amendments, and submit a report.
  • Verify the physical security and/or fire rating, where applicable, for each door opening.
  • Make any corrections to ensure the proper level of security and/or fire-rating standards.
  • Log the maintenance data and record recommendations for upgrades or replacement
  • Master keying is the manipulation of number combinations to provide maximum security, while still meeting the user groups’ requirements. The University Complex has over 200,000 keyed locks which use eight different sophisticated master key systems unique to the University of Alberta.
  • These master key systems consist of elevator control, high-security, restricted, and the Yale Bi-Centric. The Locksmith is expected to be able to develop, record, maintain and upgrade these systems to meet the future requirements of the Campus. There is also a master keying plan that has been developed and must be maintained in conjunction with the appropriate factory i.e. Abloy, Schlage, BEST and Medeco.
  • Re-keying and master keying lock cylinders
  • Re-combination cylinders for the emergency exchange program and other special projects
  • Decoding, repairing, and re-combining keyless combination chambers
  • Overhauling and testing all types of key-cutting equipment
  • Duplicating all types of keys from simple furniture types to high security restricted key systems
  • Installing locks in various cabinets, doors and security equipment
  • Emergency service due to lockouts, lock failures, lost or broken keys, vandalism or break-ins The service, repair or replacement of all failed doors, frames, locks and door hardware Giving consultation to various departments, faculties and service groups regarding security concerns, and keying requirements
  • Reviewing their maintenance of master key systems using industry best practices
  • Work closely and coordinate installation with external contractors (such as door and glass)
  • The installation, service and repair of locking devices for office equipment, furniture and cabinets
  • Meeting the training requirements for each high-security product, as performed by the factory, in order to get factory certification (a certificate is issued)
  • Installation, repair and maintenance of mechanical and electronic barrier-free door controls and operators and related safety equipment
  • Frame, door, glass and door hardware requirements for fire-rated assemblies
  • Able to read and do a takeoff from blueprints and order materials
  • Able to set schedules for the beginning and completion of major projects and renovations
  • Implement the project regarding doors, door hardware, keying components, and ensuring industry best practices are followed in equipment
