Description:

Clinical Duties Encourage a holistic response to the care of patients and those important to them. Develop Somerset palliative care services in line with appropriate guidelines and frameworks Support Somerset End of Life individualised care planning Provide senior medical palliative care clinical services to patients in a variety of settings, predominantly within the acute inpatient setting at Musgrove Park Hospital (MPH) but also including in the community, outpatients, community hospitals, and St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice Undertake out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in on-call cover on a 1 in 6 remote ‘2nd on call’ basis. If out of hours work has included attending a unit, time in lieu will be considered to facilitate work life balance. Support the senior leadership team in the development of the Clinical Nurse specialist team at MPH Support people affected by incurable cancer within Somerset via Supportive Care outpatient clinics delivered in Taunton and surrounding areas Post-graduate Education Consultants are required to supervise the education of doctors in training.
The post holder will be involved with teaching and training junior doctors and should help with both their professional and personal development. Consultants must ensure that junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to the experience required. Consultants are also responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of problems that may arise. Audit and Quality Improvement The post holder will be involved in service development via direct and supervised audit activity.
Alongside this they will participate in development using quality improvement methodology. The acute trust teams participate in national care at the end of life (NACEL) audits. This is supported by the consultants both in data collection and undertaking the subsequent action plans. The supportive care role will include both audit and quality improvement methodology work supported by an administrative team.
Research Research is encouraged, particularly when this is appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and to the service development of the department. Opportunities are available within the Trust with applications for funding co-ordinated by the Clinical Director. Appraisal, Job Planning and Mandatory annual training The successful candidate will be required to participate actively in the annual appraisal and job planning process In addition, they will be expected to attend the mandatory annual update training
