Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Diabetes & Endocrinology team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Initially for a 1 year duration but with a possibility to convert to a substantive post in due course. The post holder will be predominantly based at CGH in terms of out-patient services but will be required to cover inpatient beds and some clinics at GRH
The postholder will take over the following areas of speciality interest: Antenatal Care, insulin pumps, Young Adult Diabetes. In addition, they will provide to General Diabetes (including monthly diabetes clinics at The Vale Hospital, Dursley) & Endocrinology outpatient work along with speciality and GIM inpatient work.
There is a full Multidisciplinary Diabetes team based on both main sites and there are close links with the Community Diabetes Service and Primary Care with an active programme of integration underway.
Our in-patient speciality ward (plus general medical in-patients) and junior medical team is based on 9b at GRH and is covered by the consultant team on a rotational basis 2 weeks in 10. We provide speciality advice to inpatients at both main sites.
Diabetes Antenatal clinics for Gloucestershire are based in the Women’s Centre GRH. This MDT clinic has embraced the use of diabetes technologies, being the first in the South West to have all women with T1DM using CGM in pregnancy. Currently, women with gestational diabetes are managed virtually using the “GDM App”.
The purpose of this post is to provide a fixed term Consultant for the Trust’s Diabetes & Endocrine service. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: -
To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans
To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Trust

The department of Diabetes and Endocrinology provides both Inpatient and Outpatient services at both main sites plus peripheral clinics. This 1.0 WTE post is available following retirement.
Dr Emma Wylie is Deputy Chief of Service (scheduled services) and Dr Abigail Tomlins is Chief of Service for Medicine.
Gloucestershire Hospital NHSFT is a large DGH trust with just over 800 in-patient beds with on-site dialysis. There is access to adrenal and other endocrine surgery in the Trust with good working relationships with the surgical teams. There is a local Pituitary MDT clinic and NET MDT meeting. We have close links with the Tertiary centres in Birmingham and Bristol for more complex patients with the ability to refer to either centre depending on patient need. Gloucestershire Royal Hospital is the regional Hub for Vascular Surgery and has a well-established Diabetic Foot Service with a full MDT service.
The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department
To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
To provide on call support to the general medical take out of hours. To attend out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call
To carry out ward rounds
To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of MMC and related requirements
To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme
To assist and participate in postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, Core Trainees, StRs and other staff as appropriate
Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments
To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics
To be involved in risk management and quality assurance
To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCP guidelines
To respond appropriately to complaints and critical inciden
