We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine with a passion for excellent patient care, to join a friendly, dynamic, forward thinking ED at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the most vibrant cities in the UK.
We are looking for a team player who will contribute to our aspiration to become an elite ED, delivering ‘excellent care without exception’.
NUH ED has a strong reputation for research and education, with a collocated academic and clinical skills unit (DREEAM), which also hosts a health improvement / prevention hub. The Department has highly developed CESR and ACP Programmes and our nurses are undertaking the Faculty of Emergency Nursing Competency Programme.
NUH is a large Major Trauma Centre and DREEAM hosts the European Trauma Course. If you have an interest or expertise in quality improvement, research education and prevention please tell us about it.
This post will be available for 12 months. We are looking for candidates to start as soon as possible as the first 3 months of this role will be to support Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

Day to day, you will contribute to the consultant clinical rota. You will be expected to demonstrate leadership across the multi-professional team and support education and training of the many learners in the department, as well as contributing to quality improvement and audit. All consultants will be GCP certified and actively support recruitment to research studies. .
Non-shop floor duties are integral to the successful running of a large department. There are numerous opportunities to be part of the various groups comprising the leadership and governance structure of ED and contribute to governance, education, research and continuous improvement.

The ED at NUH is one of the busiest in Europe with 179,940 new attendances annually, 44.000 in our Children and Young People’s ED and is front door to one of the largest Major Trauma Centres in the UK. We are looking for team players to join our rapidly changing Emergency Department on our journey to excellence. We are seeking candidates with very good clinical, communication and leadership skills whose primary focus is quality patient care. You must be committed to supporting education, research and prevention / health improvement which are fundamental to our plans. You will have a senior mentor for the first year and will be supported with time to develop special interests, aligned to departmental strategy
Appointees will join a welcoming, friendly and forward thinking workforce of 30 consultants, 40 Tier 4 middle grades (HST trainees, CESR doctors and senior ACPs), 63 Junior doctors of varying grades, 48 Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), 21 Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) /Urgent Care Practitioners, 200 nurses, 3 pharmacists and 115 Clinical Support Workers and Emergency Department Assistants.
The 9 bayed Resuscitation Area includes two adult and one paediatric major trauma bays, and the Majors Area has 36 monitored bays. The Urgent Treatment Unit (UTU) is a co-located area where ambulatory illness and injury patients are assessed and treated by primary care and ED clinicians. Recent expansion of our Paediatric Emergency Department includes a new purpose built resuscitation area.
NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the biggest Trauma Network in the UK. If appointed, you will lead major trauma resuscitation, working alongside Major Trauma colleagues. DREEAM / ED is a site for the European Trauma Course and appointees will be encouraged to become instructors.
The department has recently undergone major transformation of its leadership and governance framework to develop a distributed leadership model with new structures and processes, fit for purpose for modern emergency care. Collaborative working across emergency, with a focus on the quality of the patient journey, reviewing communication, civility, quality of care and education and research, has revolutionised our relationships with specialties. Successful appointees would be expected to contribute to Specialty Interface Collaboratives (SICs), in their areas of interest.
You will join an annualised self-rostering system, designed to provide flexibility and support work-life balance. We are currently reviewing rotas across the multi-professional workforce to ensure non clinical commitments; including quality improvement and education are proactively planned.
Upon commencement, you will start on an 8 DCC, 2 SpA split, We offer 2 core SPA for the first 12 months of post to allow new consultants to settle into the role. After 12 months, core SPA will reduce to 1.5 sessions and there is the possibility to undertake additional SPA according to the needs of the department and your specialist interests.
The shop-floor roster currently encompasses three distinct roles covering:
Consultant in Charge role
Resus Room
Urgent Treatment Unit
There are protected daily consultant supervision sessions to support education of emergency medicine trainees and other learners in the clinical arena.
All consultants are expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD, Quality Improvement and Evidence-Based Practice. The ED has Consultant Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement leads who work closely with the Clinical and Audit leads, and interface with DREEAM to ensure recommendations are communicated to the education team. The Area Teams and Specialty Interface Collaboratives oversee governance relevant to their areas of responsibility and liaise with the Governance lead. As well as audits responsive to local need and clinical incidents, RCEM audits are also undertaken, allowing national benchmarking.
