Description:
The department of Plastic Surgery is located at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, where the inpatient adult and paediatric beds, dedicated operating theatre facilities and main outpatient sessions are based. Most emergency and some elective work is undertaken at Wexham Park Hospital. Outpatient clinics and operating sessions are also held at Heatherwood Hospital and at King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, St Mark’s Hospital, Maidenhead, Bracknell, and Chalfont’s St Peters.
The department manages trauma from a large catchment, including patients from regional hospitals such as Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge and the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Up to 50% of the inpatient activity is dedicated to the provision of acute care for trauma and emergency care.
This post is a locum post initially for 6 months. At present funding is not in place for this to become a substantive post. The post will have a focus on hand and wrist trauma but there will be a variable caseload of elective hand, general plastic surgery and skin cancer surgery according to the needs of the department. The successful candidate would become part of the Hand Unit working with four other plastic consultants, the Hand Fellow and Trauma Coordinator. Trauma responsibilities will include the Closed Hand Injury Clinic (CHIC), Plastic Urgent Care (PUC) clinic which sees open injuries, and a trauma list.
Our hand trauma figures continue to rise and there is an interest in the department to expand the hand trauma cover we provide to ensure we adhere to BSSH standards.
The ability to work flexibly, cohesively and in collaboration with the existing consultants is a necessary requirement to the post.
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust provides NHS hospital services for 900,000 people across Berkshire, Hampshire Surrey, and South Buckinghamshire. It came into being on October 1, 2014 following the amalgamation of two neighbouring trusts. It was the first successful acquisition of one NHS foundation trust by another.
Services are delivered from three main hospital sites at Frimley Park, near Camberley, Heatherwood at Ascot, and Wexham Park, Slough, along with a number of satellite centres. As well as delivering excellent district general hospital services to its population the trust has specialist cardiac interventional centre, vascular, stroke, spinal, cystic fibrosis, and plastic services across a wide catchment.
The successful candidate would slot into a proposed job plan which may change subject to the needs of the department. There are also microsurgical lists twice monthly. This department runs a consultant of the day on call with a view to achieve a consultant delivered service rather than consultant led. The appointed candidate would join the on-call rota of 1:8 with a fixed day on call every other week. The appointment will be subject to the terms and conditions of the new consultant contract. The job plan will be made up of 10 programmed activities (PA). This includes the new on call system which sees the Consultant on-call deliver the following activity depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. There will be a requirement to work 1:4 Saturdays
