Locum Consultant in Trauma and Emergency General Surgery

This is a Locum Consultant post that is flexible to support both, emergency general surgery (EGS) and Major Trauma Surgery. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi–disciplinary team providing and further developing care for major trauma and to provide and develop acute surgical emergency services at King’s. The post holder will be encouraged to develop and implement EGS and trauma pathways and engage in related research. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff and responsibility to share in and support the academic and organisational activities of the Clinical Academic Group (CAG) across King’s Health Partners.
The Acute Surgical Team has dedicated junior staff. The post holder is expected to attend ASU meetings and Major Trauma meetings and support the ongoing care of major trauma patients to meet the 7-day working and major trauma peer review standards of care from admission to rehabilitation. The post is essential for part of a code red damage control on call rota for major trauma as well as the support of emergency general surgery. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the ongoing transformation and service development of same cay emergency care in surgery and definitive care of surgical patients.

THE EMERGENCY SURGERY COVER:

Out of hours on call from 6pm to 8am Mondays to Thursdays. This cover is provided by the surgeons within the General Surgery group and it is a fixed commitment.
Week-end cover Friday 6.00pm to Monday 8.00am currently on a 1:10 basis – all surgeons including ASU / Trauma participate.
The Trauma group (including this post) will cover
Emergency General surgery (ASU) week on a 1:4 or a 1:8 basis from 8.00am – 18.00pm Monday to Friday. (Note that the frequency of the ASU cover may change depending on the interests and the experience of the successful candidate and the establishment of other posts currently in recruitment).
A Trauma Surgeon of the week in rotation with other colleagues in the firm.
1:4 (or 1:8) Weekend ward round of ASU (Acute Surgical Unit) patients 8.00am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday – following the ASU week on call.
The post will be based at the Denmark Hill site of King’s College Hospital. There will be an average of 9 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other professional activities. The out of hours On-Call is classed as Category A.
The care group is currently having discussions regarding changes in the model of emergency surgery and therefore the above model is likely to change in 6 months.

Together with the other consultant surgeons in the team to provide a service for the major trauma and emergency general surgery patients.
Shared responsibility with the other consultant colleagues for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleague’s periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the Surgery Divisional management team.
To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
To contribute to the Audit Programme and MDT
To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
To undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional Manager / Clinical Directors.
To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.
You have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
You are required to observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
You are required to observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
You are required to be responsible, with management support, for your own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.
