Description:
The Ophthalmology department provides general and specialist Ophthalmology services. Outpatient Ophthalmology, Orthoptic and Optometry clinics are located at Russells Hall Hospital. An Orthoptic and Optometry service is also provided at the Guest Outpatients department. The department has a Diagnostic Hub located at Corbett Hospital to support virtual clinics.
The Optical Services team consists of 7 Orthoptists, 1 Optometrists, 1 Glaucoma technician, 7 Ophthalmic technicians, 2 OCT technicians and an Orthoptic Clerical Assistant. The department undertakes the diagnosis and management of amblyopia (or lazy eye) and strabismus (misalignment of the eyes or squint). With adults the department manage and treat a range of conditions leading to double vision, commonly following neurological episodes, such as strokes or brain damage. Orthoptists are also involved in Glaucoma practitioner clinics, intravitreal (IVT) injections, Specialist Adult Strabismus clinics, Low Vision Assessment, Pre-school and school vision screening, Visual processing difficulties clinics and Community clinics.
We invite applications for the role of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in glaucoma. This position is crucial for advancing our glaucoma service, and the successful candidate will collaborate with the Glaucoma Team.
The post entails 5 Programmed Activities (PAS), encompassing outpatient clinics, laser and day case sessions. These activities are aligned with departmental needs to deal with the glaucoma backlog for new and follow-up patients, including patient-related administrative and SPA (Supporting Professional Activities) responsibilities.
Teaching and training junior doctors and medical students, participating in audit activities, and supporting the acute referral service as required
The post holder is not obligated to participate in an on-call rota. Providing consultant cover for an in-house Urgent Referral Clinic (URC) Monday to Friday (09:00 – 17:00) on a rota basis, offering clinical advice, and supervising the URC doctor.
