Locum Senior House Officer (SHO) Job Description for NHS Trust
Position: Locum Senior House Officer (SHO) Agency Post
Employer: NHS Trust
Location: Various locations within the NHS Trust
Contract Type: Temporary / Locum
Duration: Flexible shifts (Day/Night/Weekend)
Visa: We don’t provide any Visa, Candidate must have there own RTW in UK.
Experience required: Minimum Two years of NHS experience.
Job Purpose:
The Locum SHO will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to patients across various departments and specialties within the NHS Trust. This role is designed to offer flexibility to doctors seeking temporary or short-term work. The SHO will be required to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring patients receive the best standard of care in line with NHS guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting patient assessments, taking medical histories, and performing physical examinations.
  • Assisting senior doctors and consultants in the diagnosis and management of patients.
  • Writing clinical notes, orders, and ensuring accurate record-keeping in line with NHS standards.
  • Prescribing medications under supervision and monitoring the effects of treatment.
  • Carrying out ward rounds, updating patients and families on treatment plans and progress.
  • Liaising with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care.
  • Responding to medical emergencies and assisting in the resuscitation of patients when needed.
  • Attending relevant clinical meetings, handovers, and training sessions.
  • Ensuring adherence to local and national clinical guidelines and safety protocols.

Requirements:

  • Essential Qualifications:
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration with a license to practice.
  • At least 1-2 years of post-graduate clinical experience (Foundation Year 1/2 or equivalent).
  • Experience:
  • Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in an NHS setting.
  • Experience working in one or more of the relevant specialties (as listed above).
  • Competence in handling basic medical and surgical emergencies.
  • Skills & Competencies:
  • Excellent clinical knowledge and sound judgment in the care of patients.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy hospital environment.
  • Ability to work independently, with supervision from consultants and registrars.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Good computer literacy and familiarity with NHS systems (e.g., Electronic Health Records).
  • Compliance & Documentation:
  • Up-to-date DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance.
  • Right to work in the UK (UK/EU/EEA citizenship or valid work visa).
  • Evidence of immunization and vaccination as per NHS guidelines (e.g., Hep B, TB).
  • Medical Indemnity Insurance.
  • Desirable:
  • ALS (Advanced Life Support) certification.
  • Experience in a specific area of interest or specialty.
  • Participation in research or audits, with evidence of quality improvement initiatives.
