QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Business Administration or related discipline.
- Considerable experience in the solid waste industry with responsibility in collections and/or site operations or another industry with responsibility for daily pickup/delivery/routing and managing a fleet of vehicles.
- Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience motivating, training, and supervising unionized staff in a customer service oriented, politically sensitive environment.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments in order to meet deadlines in a very demanding environment.
- Excellent communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and mapping systems such as ARC View.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to resolve customer concerns and issues.
- A team player with excellent interpersonal skills to be able to deal with sensitive issues.
- Knowledge of applicable waste management legislation and regulatory/safety compliance and the ability to research and stay up-to-date with new legislation.
- Must possess a valid G driver’s licence and have a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
- A DZ or higher license would be considered an asset.
Responsibilities:
- Provides visible and positive leadership to staff, developing and nurturing a work environment that is inclusive, respectful and motivating for staff.
- Directly supervise the Roll off, Multi Residential, and Cart Delivery Staff. Ensure proper hiring practices and work scheduling and routing for employees; also ensure orientation, job training as required, performance feedback, counseling and career development for employees.
- Perform all work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act Section 27, Duties of a Supervisor and ensure all Site and Collections Staff perform their work in accordance with Section 28 Duties of a Worker.
- Provide supervision and backup support for Site Operations and Collection work areas and supervisors as required.
- Establish policies, operating procedures, work methods and standards for the Logistics section; monitor the section’s operating performance against established performance targets (KPI’s) and initiate corrective action as required.
- Ensure that compliance with all regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures (through inspection and corrective action) is maintained and issues raised are expeditiously tended to.
- Maintain up-to-date thorough knowledge of existing applicable legislation, guidelines, regulations and policies
- Provide effective training and supervision to all staff and contractors on site policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the Solid Waste Resources contact for Ministry of Labour, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Transportation and other ministries, as may be required.
- Continuously research industry best practices, develop, recommend and implement new strategies.
- Monitor and assist with budget preparation for related operation budgets, capital forecast budget(s).
- Participates as member of Solid Waste Resources Leadership Team.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
