Description:
The Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering is looking for an M.Sc. thesis worker for a project titled “The Impact of Air Ionization on Aerosol Dispersion and Its Implications for Occupant Well-being in Indoor Environments”. The work is funded by Halton Foundation for 6 months.
Air ionization is a method commonly utilized in enclosed air purifier devices along with other filtration techniques. The ionizer device applies high voltage to give nearby air molecules a negative charge. These charged ions then stick to airborne particles such as viruses, making them more likely to adsorb onto surfaces. In this project, contrary to most applications, the ionizer device is not enclosed and directly ionizes air in the room. This type of device is cheaper to make and consumes less energy than a typical room air purifier.
Your role and goals
In collaboration with other members of the research group, the plan is to investigate how well the stand-alone ionizer can reduce aerosol content in indoor air. The work is experimental and done in the test room of the Aalto HVAC laboratory. An NaCl-based test aerosol is used to emulate the airborne pathogens and particle counters are used to assess the concentration levels in the room. You will be responsible for conducting the measurements and analyzing the results with the other researchers.
Your network and team
The position is at the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering of Aalto School of Engineering. The work will be done in the Energy Conversion and Systems research group. Prof. Risto Kosonen will supervise the project, and D. Sc. (Tech)s Simo Kilpeläinen & Weixin Zhao will act as thesis advisors.
Your experience
Required qualifications:
- Understanding of the fundamentals of fluid dynamics and heat transfer
- Ability to work independently in a laboratory.
- Good analytical skills.
- Good written and oral communication skills in English. Finnish language is not required.
What we offer
You have the possibility to graduate as an M.Sc. in the HVAC field. The thesis project duration is six months, as stated earlier. The salary is 2500 EUR/month. The planned starting date is Feb 15, 2025, and the position can be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found. The work is done in Otaniemi at the offices and laboratory of the Energy Conversion and Systems research group.
