Shift Availability

  • Day Shift - Monday to Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  • Overtime available

The Machine Shop is responsible for using machine tools to make or modify parts, primarily metal parts used to build Aspen’s trailers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Sets-up, programs and operates HAAS CNC Milling Center and HAAS Lathe with live tooling.
  • May assist with conventional equipment (lathe and/or mill), and/or numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers for fabrication of metallic and non-metallic parts.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as required.
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces.
  • Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Maintain, repair, and calibrate precision measuring instruments such as dial indicators, fixed gauges, height gauges and other measuring devices.
  • Other jobs as required.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Sets-up and operates special purpose equipment, conventional (lathe and/or mill), and/or numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers for fabrication of metallic and non-metallic parts.
  • Operation of manual and CNC lathes, manual drill presses and manual / CNC milling machines
  • Measure and perform calculations
  • Good communication with co-workers in a collaborative team environment
  • Develop and maintain a regular cleaning schedule to ensure the machine shop is kept tidy and well organized upon completion of work assignments

Attributes and Skills

  • Crane operation.
  • Working knowledge of metals, identification, mechanical properties, and machinability.
  • Experience in Inspection & completing records using precision measuring tools, comparators, and gauges applicable to the machining trade. This includes the inspection of straight and taper screw threads; Acme, Stub-Acme, API: Buttress Casing, Round Casing, Line Pipe Casing, etc.
  • Proficient with reading & interpreting manufacturing drawings, Imperial and Metric dimensioning systems, symbols.
  • Proficient with Math and Geometry from the machinist trade.
  • Versed in troubleshooting and debugging manufacturing processes.
  • Assist as required with machine lock outs and preventive maintenance of the automated cell components.
  • Able to work autonomously and uses good decision-making practices.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience setting up Haas CNC Milling Centers and Lathe with live tooling.
  • Set up and Programming machines is a must.
  • Journeymen Machinist certification with interprovincial Red Seal endorsement is an asset.
  • Overhead crane training an asset.
  • Must have a strong work ethic.
  • Must be quick to learn new skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Successful applicants may be asked to prove experience and competency during a hands-on interview(s) on the machines.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs - fitness test required.
  • Standing on your feet for a long period of time.
  • Have good eye to hand coordination.
  • Be able to bend, crouch and kneel for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear personal protective gear most of the day.
