An exciting opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to join our dynamic and growing Acute Oncology Service as a Macmillan Consultant Practitioner in Acute Oncology and Immunotherapy. We are looking for a Consultant Practitioner with advanced skills who has experience in oncology and is passionate about, delivering high quality acute oncology care, with a specialist interest in immunotherapy (immune checkpoint inhibitors).
The Acute Oncology team is a diverse team which comprises of a team of Acute Oncology Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialist’s, Support Workers and Navigator who work across both sites at Maidstone Hospital and Pembury. To date the team’s achievements, include implementation of a 7-day service, working together to support patients with complications of cancer treatments, and cancer related issues, promoting early recognition, management and early supportive discharge.
The advertised role has been developed following recommendations from the Kent & Medway Cancer Alliance Acute Oncology Improvement Report and the wider Oncology Review and is aligned to national recommendations for Acute Oncology Service (AOS) Clinical Leadership, collaborative working and engagement with improved working practices and equity between Cancer Centres and District General Hospitals.
This role will be key in the improving pathways for patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors presenting unwell to the acute hospital and support the ongoing development of the planned Acute Oncology Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) which is expanding.
The job will involve working as an autonomous practitioner with clinics and working within the acute oncology SDEC, outpatient clinics and inpatient reviews. The role will also involve strategic working across Kent & Medway teams, service development with standardised education programme, defined pathways to improve patient outcomes, experience and ensure an equitable and accessible 7-day Acute Oncology Service.
The role of Acute Oncology Consultant Practitioner will include strategic leadership, innovations such as the ongoing development of the Acute Oncology SDEC within AOS, improved pathways for immune checkpoint inhibitors toxicities of acutely unwell patents presenting to hospital across Kent & Medway and also patient/clinical practice based at MTW providing clinical input and supporting complex inpatient caseloads as required; providing responsive expert service.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email mtw-tr.professionalstandards@nhs.net if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.
