Description:

Maintenance Assistant - Accommodation Manawatū
Position Purpose: The Maintenance Assistant provides hands-on, day-to-day, and longer-
term facilities maintenance within Massey Halls.
This includes a diverse and changing array of tasks including, but not
limited to providing and sourcing household items, minor household
repairs, paint touch ups, changing light fixtures, basic landscaping tasks,
furniture removal and storage. Where the maintenance assistant holds
an appropriate level of skills, knowledge and experience this may extend
to include a range of basic carpentry tasks and troubleshooting of
household plumbing and electrical problems.
Alongside maintenance and repairs, the Maintenance Assistant will assist
with keeping an accurate asset register, undertake regular room
inspections, and have a focus on health and safety at work and risk
management.

Accountabilities
Residential  Provide day-to-day maintenance services, to ensure the Halls
Maintenance remain in good order
 Handle and resolve maintenance enquires and issues, in a timely
manner
 Assist in performing maintenance inspections when required.
 Assist with inspections of residents’ rooms and apartments to
ensure that they are maintained to the appropriate standard.
Organise any cleaning or maintenance required as a result of
these inspections
 Support the accommodation team to manage the operational
activities of the Halls
Asset Management  Assist with operating a Maintenance Management System for:
o Maintaining an equipment asset register
o Maintaining an inventory of stock and spares
o Scheduling preventative maintenance tasks
o Recording corrective works for the properties
o Reporting on maintenance

Maintenance and  Complete assigned maintenance requests ensuring that they are
Repairs all attended to in a prompt and courteous manner, with a focus
on completing the work in-house where qualified to do so
 Assist with the coordination of operations, cleaning and
maintenance
 Assist with coordination and responsibility for workshop tools and
equipment
 Provide technical support and advise on building maintenance
issues
 Assist with managing stock of necessary spare parts for services,
plant and equipment.
Risk and Safety  Adhere to Health and Safety legislation, Privacy legislation and
any other legislation that impacts on the Halls environment
 Be fully conversant with the Massey Fire and Emergency
evacuation Procedures.
 Grow and develop knowledge and understanding of the Code of
Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and the
Code of Practice for Tertiary Education Accommodation.
 Assist in emergency and civil defence procedures as required.
Contractor Management  Where required assist with the supervision, coordination,
control, and monitoring of the delivery of services to the
premises by contractors.
Stakeholder  Establish positive relationships with staff, residents, stakeholders
Relationships/ and suppliers
Miscellaneous  Occasional weekend and after-hours attendance may be required
as part of Incident Response and/or Contractor Supervision
 All other reasonable duties from time to time as directed by the
Facilities Manager.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications:  A relevant trade qualification or equivalent experience

 A current New Zealand driver’s licence for the purpose of:

  • Driving a University vehicle/van around campus to

undertake the required maintenance and repair jobs

  • Moving and storing furniture, tools, cleaning items etc

Experience:
At least three years’ relevant experience and high-level skills in a relevant
role including:

A diverse range of experience in building, carpentry, and/or
general facilities and/or household maintenance and repairs
 Proven experience in communication, customer service and
relationship management.
In addition, the ideal candidate should have:
 Ability to work to a tight time frame, prioritise, without
compromising accuracy

ability to prioritise tasks, manage time, meet deadlines, and
manage unpredictable workload.

Children’s Workers) Regulations 2015 is required. Part of this
process includes a requirement to pass the police vetting part of the
safety check.
