The Ministry of Education is seeking a dynamic Maintenance Foreman/Woman to lead and oversee the cost-efficient repair and maintenance of our buildings and essential systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection. In this crucial role, you will also liaise with on-site service contract supervisors to ensure seamless custodial, security, and other essential services. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

  • you have knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems;
  • you have understanding of the principles and practices involved in the upkeep of structural, mechanical, and electrical components of large facilities such as schools, sports complexes, and swimming pools;
  • you have familiarity with computer systems and software used for maintenance management, including CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) and MS Office applications;

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • you have strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly convey instructions and expectations to maintenance staff, ensuring cohesive and efficient teamwork in a diverse and inclusive environment;
  • you have the ability to handle conflicts and resolve issues amicably, fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere among staff and stakeholders while maintaining focus on operational goals;
  • you have proficiency in liaising with various stakeholders, including school administrators, contractors, and on-site service providers, to address concerns, coordinate activities, and maintain positive working relationships.

LEGISLATION KNOWLEDGE:

  • You have understanding of relevant regulations and codes, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Building Codes, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) standards.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND TEAM LEADERSHIP SKILLS:

  • you have experience in planning and overseeing maintenance projects, coordinating with team members and contractors to ensure timely and high-quality completion of tasks;
  • you have understanding of managing staff to determine work priorities, scheduling, and resolve unforeseen circumstances.

Responsibilities:

As a Maintenance Foreman/Woman with the Ministry of Education, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the optimal condition of our educational facilities, including a day and lodging school, a sports complex, an indoor swimming pool, and expansive grounds. Under the general supervision of the Manager, you will coordinate the upkeep and oversee a dedicated team of maintenance professionals. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • determine work priorities, schedule tasks, and allocate the necessary time for repairs, ensuring all projects are completed efficiently and effectively;
  • recommend revisions to contract specifications to the Manager to enhance service delivery;
  • ensure that all repairs comply with established maintenance codes, applicable by-laws, building codes, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workers Compensation Act, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) standards;
  • guarantee a safe and comfortable physical environment for students and staff, prioritizing their well-being in all maintenance activities;
  • approve requisitions for repair materials and services, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and inclusively to support the diverse needs of our community;
  • regularly inspect buildings and grounds, identifying and addressing maintenance needs to ensure our facilities remain safe, accessible, and welcoming to all.
