Job Summary
This is an on-the-floor Supervisory role overseeing the day-to-day operation of a team of Repair Mechanics and Service Technicians. This individual will be a resource for both employees and the General Manager (GM) to address technical questions & problems and set up and maintain effective shop procedures. This individual will be responsible for maximizing internal efficiencies, improving the equipment quality, improving department safety, and helping ensure productivity requirements are met. This Supervisor will support the team by also repairing equipment to help the team meet production requirements.
Requirements
- 2 years of Supervisory experience in a Heavy Equipment Shop or related environment.
- 5 years of mechanic and/or technical experience.
- High School Diploma required. Post-Secondary education is an asset.
- Red Seal 421A preferred.
- G Class Driver’s license. Most recent abstract (within last 3 months) must be submitted with application.
- Forklift license
- Must have exceptional customer service skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
- Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Must be able to deal with difficult daily productivity conversation and hold people accountable where needed.
- Must be able to report any Incidents and H&S hazards to the H&S director and the GM of operations support within 24 hrs.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
- Work close with the GM to set and communicate goals, direction and priorities in the development of a comprehensive shop management program.
- Lead by demonstrating the required behaviours, attitudes and mindset to develop a strong corporate safety culture and to position the company for continued, sustainable growth.
- Maintain an ongoing understanding of the company’s operations, strategic plans, risks and issues.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to all direct reports and evaluate performance as per company standards.
- Bring alignment and consistency to Operations.
- Build effective relationships across the organization
- Manage daily productivity and coach team members live.
- Manage hard down equipment and ensure status codes are maintained to company standards
- Work closely with outsource vendors and ensure machine minimum down time.
- Complete daily QC on mechanics ensuring all machines is to Stephenson’s standards.
Technical Resource
- Provide guidance and leadership to all direct reports
- Ensure all technical manuals are available for easy access
- Offer parts recommendations to prevent stock outs and down time
- Organize all annual and 10-year structural inspections on lifts and booms
- Repair equipment and perform duties as required to support the team and the business
- Call in outsource technicians to assist with electrical diagnostics on machines needing proprietary software
- Oversee and guide technicians to ensure minimum down time and avoid
Continuous Improvement
- Support company driven continuous improvement initiatives.
- To develop programs and strategies to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Continue to drive improvement regarding productivity on a daily/weekly basis.
Administration
- Update Service Co-Ordinator when orders are needed or delays with equipment completion and detail.
- Compete 1 QC piece and document in the system daily.
Health & Safety
- Adheres to all Company Safety Policy’s
- Be a role model promoting safety to all Staff, Customers, Suppliers and Contractors
- Report any workplace hazards and helps to eliminate them
- Recognize and remedy safety hazards immediately.
- Create a culture within the division that recognizes the importance of safety
- Maintains knowledge of relevant legislated standards, such as WHMIS, ROT, Transportation of Dangerous Goods etc. that impact on our branches or position
- Understand your role with respect to Health and Safety (refer to the employee guidelines of health and safety)
- Ensure safe work environment and proper repair procedures are followed and necessary documentation is present
- Complete safety audits on mechanics on a weekly basis
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
