JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the University Controller, the Legal Accounting Manager will directly manage and oversee the daily, monthly, and year-end operations of the University’s legal accounting processes; assist with the GAAP year-end close if needed; assist with the annual preparation of the University’s allocation plan (EO1000); assist with preparation for the 49ER Foundation audit and Financial Statements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of department’s legal activities: general ledger and accounts receivable and all reporting related to these functions. Responsible for planning activities, development of policies and procedures, administrative and fiscal coordination, and interpretation of related rules and regulations.
  • Serve as a Functional Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the campus CMS Finance team for all General Accounting activities and provide functional production support for all areas of primary responsibility. Have an in-depth knowledge of the department’s systems and processes in order to document, recommend, develop and implement improved process flows. Responsible for the documentation of existing procedures and recommendations for future system enhancements.
  • Assist with the annual preparation of the University’s allocation plan (EO1000).
  • Assist with preparation for the 49ER Foundation audit.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Excellent organizational skills including ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities and be accountable for own work results and team results for effective and timely completion of work assignments. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability and desire to work in a flexible, collaborative manner and to provide open feedback to customers, stakeholders, executive management, supervisors, coworkers and staff. In depth knowledge of the General Accounting and related policies and procedures and interpretation of rules and laws. Excellent oral and written communication skills for effectively writing and communicating policies, operating procedures, performance appraisals, management reports and other documents as necessary.
Experience with the application of problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex problems. Thorough knowledge of financial record-keeping methods, sound accounting controls, business processes, policies, and procedures (higher education experience preferred) to interpret and apply the effects of policies and rules to financial analyses and projections. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP) for preparation of financial statements and preparing for audits.
Ability to effectively supervise, motivate and coordinate staff/work team activities. Apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing job responsibilities. Ability to implement process mapping, flowcharting and re-engineering activities. Expertise in investigating and analyzing issues with broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Ability to develop effective management reports. Experience working with ERP accounting systems including the General Ledger, Billing and Accounts Receivable modules.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting, Business Administration or Finance is required. A minimum of three years of related experience required.
  • Experience in Higher Education Fund Accounting. MBA and/or CPA preferred. General Accounting, Financial Reporting, and public accounting experience desirable.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $8,742 - $10,750 per month commensurate with candidate’s education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range: The MPP Comp Summary Range for this position is $8,742- $13,133 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
