Job Summary
The Manager, Business Intelligence and Visualization Center of Excellence is responsible for leading a team of Business Analysts, Developers, and Data modellers to deliver reporting, analytics, visualization, and associated data management capabilities to the organization. Specific data management capabilities include master data management, data quality, and data cataloging. In addition, this team will be driving and delivering data literacy to the organization on how to leverage data to make day-to-day decisions. This role will work closely with stakeholders across the organization as well as the data engineering team to develop data and analytics products to enable data-driven decisions.

In this role you will:

Planning

  • Responsible for creating strategy and roadmap on business intelligence and visualization aligned with NAV CANADA’s business strategy and objectives
  • Plans and executes data and analytics projects to extract valuable insights and transform complex data into meaningful information to deliver business outcomes, ensuring risks are managed and issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Actively contributes to the broader context of NAV CANADA’s Data, Analytics, and AI strategy.
  • Develops a roadmap and leads the modernization effort to transform legacy data platforms.
  • Conduct annual financial planning and project financial planning including:
  • Determining financial requirements and administering their portion of the budget monitoring and reporting activity against budgets/business plans and responding to variances as appropriate
  • Determining business/financial efficiencies respecting the utilization of resources
  • Committing corporate funds through the authority to negotiate, conclude and manage professional resources contracts

Business Intelligence and Visualization Program Delivery

  • Provides leadership and direction on building and operationalizing complex data solutions, applying transformations, and recommending data cleansing/quality solutions.
  • Continually monitors and refines the roadmap to meet business needs and take advantage of rapidly evolving technologies.
  • Modernizes and strengthens core data management capabilities for analytics consumption including master data management, data quality, data privacy and security as well as data cataloging.
  • Responsible creating a modernization roadmap for the legacy data platforms (i.e., data stage, Congos, etc.)
  • Leads the modernization efforts for the legacy data platforms
  • Manages approved capital and allocated operating budgets based on the roadmap and manage the product lifecycles. Management of capital projects (scope, schedule, cost) from project proposal to life cycle management
  • Secures investment for projects, following the NAV CANADA approved processes.
  • Provides effective product support to ensure a high degree of end user satisfaction.
  • Manages Power BI tools and other legacy tools including data stage and Cognos BI
  • Responsible for establishing a CoE to provide data literacy training, analytics technology training, and best practices to analytics users across the organization. Responsibilities include:
  • Organizing a Community of Practice for BI and Visualization
  • Providing ongoing data literacy training to stakeholders across the organization
  • Providing best practices on how to conduct analytics
  • Providing training on how to use Power BI
  • Driving the adoption of analytics products, technologies and tools.

Stakeholder Relationships and Communications

  • Manages and delivers comprehensive reports, dashboards, visualization, and models across NAV CANADA. Leads the self-serve data and analytics efforts to enable data scientists, citizen data scientists, decision makers across NAV CANADA to access and analyze data safely.
  • Partners with business stakeholders to understand analytics needs and use cases to continuously update data holdings in the data platform. Leads and facilitates discussions and workshops.
  • Collaborates with data engineers, data scientists, and citizen data scientists across the organization to implement and maintain data models and integrate predictive models or machine learning algorithms into analytics workflows.
  • Builds and maintains Business Intelligence and Visualization Center of Excellence through communities of practice, data and analytics initiatives, success stories and other means to increase and sustains organizational engagement.
  • Manages stakeholders and promotes close collaboration across the organization for knowledge sharing, mentoring, and training related to data and analytics.

Leadership

  • Manages a team of direct reports or assigned resources including hiring, managing work, providing guidance, and coaching, and managing leave and overtime. Responsibilities include:
  • Directing the day-to-day activities by establishing the work unit’s business goals, performance indicators and objectives, priorities, work plans, milestone deliverables, financial and resource plans.
  • Determining the on-going staff requirements and hiring and/or promoting subordinates in order to fulfill these needs.
  • Conducting regular performance assessments of all staff and establishing training strategies to target developmental needs.
  • As necessary, conferring discipline which involves all variety of scenarios from verbal to written warnings, suspensions or ultimately dismissal.
  • Determining resolution and signing on behalf of management for complaint stage or level 1 type grievances
  • Authorizing leaves of absence and managing issues associated with attendance management.
  • Authorizing the use of overtime
  • Leads various working groups across the organization to improve our data and analytics capabilities.

What you bring:

  • Solid understanding of relevant data governance, data quality, and data security best practices
  • Knowledge of ETL processes, data integration, and data warehousing concepts.
  • Knowledge of data architecture and data modelling concepts and best practices.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms such as AWS, GCP, and Azure for data storage and processing
  • Extensive knowledge of project and change management approaches and methodologies.
  • At least five years of experience in any of the following areas: data strategy, data governance, data analyst, business intelligence analyst, data architecture, data modelling
  • Experience in managing employees and project teams.
  • Experience working with Power BI or other visualization tools.
  • Experience in delivering self-serve capabilities and/or data literacy program to the organization.
  • Experience working in close collaboration with cross-functional business groups.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering or Information Technology or equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
