Summary: We are looking for an experienced, dedicated and effective Laboratory Manager (LM) to ensure our chemistry R&D laboratories are safe and productive. The Laboratory Manager will play a central role in setting up new facilities and managing operations of the chemistry R&D laboratory. They will be supporting a team of scientists researching rare diseases and identifying potential targets for treatments, ultimately impacting, and transforming the lives of many patients. Reporting to the Facilities Manager (FM) in Cambridge, UK, the role requires an experienced, reliable and adaptable team player to manage daily operations in a busy chemistry R&D lab. The successful candidate will be managing equipment, consumables and waste streams, in addition to promoting and supporting Health & Safety, sustainability and innovation in the lab. The role holder will have one direct report, a Chemistry Lab Technician. Responsibilities: Additional representative responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: Health and Safety

  • Act as Chemistry Safety Officer for our Chemistry laboratories
  • Review and manage H&S documentation
  • Provide advice on chemical safety issues
  • Provide training for handling chemical agents (according to approved SOPs)
  • Chair, attend and present at the Chemical Safety Committee
  • Perform monthly SHE inspections in the Chemistry labs, close actions, report non-compliance
  • Drive H&S innovations

    Risk Mitigation

  • Ensure company’s assets are safeguarded, by managing chemical storage, equipment and processes

  • Ensure facilities are compliant with relevant regulations
  • Respond to and resolve out of hours alarms and emergencies
  • Create and regularly update an emergency call out list

Efficiency & Operations

  • Become key point of contact for Chemistry labs
  • Maintain efficient lab procedures by creating and managing lab related documentation
  • Work with scientists and leadership to identify and resolve problems
  • Oversee chemistry laboratory equipment repairs, and preventative maintenance contracts
  • Oversee the management of stockroom inventory to best anticipate ordering needs
  • Monitor, manage and order laboratory gases and cryogens
  • Respond to and resolve out of hours alarms and emergencies
  • Line-manage, train and support chemistry Laboratory Technician
  • Support relocation planning, chemistry laboratory set up and site exit activities

Waste & Sustainability

  • Lead sustainability initiatives for Chemistry labs
  • Responsible for waste management and recycling
  • Work towards the site being carbon neutral

Finance, Quality and Strategy

  • Responsible for continuity of chain supply to Chemistry labs: purchase equipment, reagents and consumables to ensure optimal value for money
  • Propose expenditure to FM, support budget planning by representing Chemistry team’s needs
  • Help instill a culture of quality, including support for Scientists in development, implementation and maintaining of SOPs for operations
