About this opportunity:
Cenovus’s Corporate Data & Information Technology group is looking for a Manager, Data Science and Advanced Analytics. In this leadership role, you will spearhead the development and implementation of advanced analytics solutions, using your expertise in machine learning, optimization, and data-driven decision-making. This role requires strategic collaboration across all business streams and Data & Information Technology teams to deliver innovative solutions that drive significant business value.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead and inspire the Data Science and Advanced Analytics team, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery
  • Cultivate a high-performing team by driving alignment, focusing on priorities, and fostering employee development through mentorship and coaching
  • Lead complex data science projects and teams to develop and implement advanced analytics solutions, ensuring they align with business goals
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, data governance, data engineers, analysts, and business partners, to translate business problems into data science solutions
  • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of machine learning models, from development through deployment, ensuring scalability and performance in production environments
  • Provide strategic guidance to business partners on integrating data science into their business processes to improve decision-making and operational efficiency
  • Act as a leader with vision; stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and AI, and drive innovation within the team
  • Mentor and develop junior data scientists, providing guidance on data science standard processes and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement
  • Manage relationships with key partners, ensuring their needs and expectations are met through effective communication and collaboration
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Data Science and Advanced Analytics function, aligning it with the overall business strategy and goals

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent required
  • 12+ years of experience in data science and analytics, with a consistent track record in managing and delivering complex projects within the industry
  • Formal people leadership experience is an asset
  • Deep expertise in machine learning, NLP, data engineering, and operations research
  • Experience developing, deploying, and leading scalable machine learning solutions for business applications
  • Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams and maintain relationships effectively
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and insights to both technical and non-technical partners
  • Proficiency in Python or R for data science and machine learning, with experience in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Expertise in MLOps, model deployment, and operationalizing machine learning at scale
  • Familiarity with various business functions within the industry and experience providing tailored data science solutions
  • A solid foundation in data science, operations research, or a related field
