JOB SUMMARY

The Manager, Engineering is responsible for the oversight of inspection and maintenance of tracks, roadbed, and right way. The role ensures maintenance and inspections are in accordance with the sound engineering practices and approved railway standards, specifications, procedures, budget and CN’s operating plan.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience

Railroad

  • Minimum 5 years of railroad experience

o Minimum 3 years of track experience
o Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience

Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering*
  • United States (U.S.) Operating Rules certified
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of track structure, construction, maintenance and identifying defects
  • Knowledge of ETS and operating measures
  • Basic understanding of applicable collective agreements
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Track Inspection System (TIS), and Systems, Applications and Products (SAP)

Responsibilities:

Oversee Day-to-Day Territory Operations

  • Lead the day-to-day operation on the territory
  • Manage the maintenance, construction, and zone workforce
  • Oversee schedules and budgets through completion
  • Develop business cases for capitalization of zone basic capital
  • Ensure track inspections and repairs are completed meeting CN track standards
  • Analyze and interpret track geometry and rail flaw detection reports to identify conditions requiring action to meet Engineering Track Standards (ETS)

Staff Management

  • Lead Track Supervisors, Assistant Track Supervisors and hourly employees across the territory, managing employee performance, development and retention
  • Engage with workforce through coaching, feedback and two-way dialogue
  • Partner with Labor Relations (LR) to identify root causes and resolve grievance issues across the territory

Safety Compliance

  • Build safety compliance and improve results through regular efficiency testing and walkabouts
  • Handle activities related to derailment and disruptions in service, while working with Transportation and Mechanical to establish cause, prevention and service recovery
  • Maintain and implement the regional safety action plan
  • Ensure employees are actively engaged in quality Exposure Reduction Discussion (ERD), Job Safety Briefing (JSB) and Field Verification of Life Critical Rules (FVLCR) meeting required Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Eliminate Serious Injury Fatality (SIF) potential injuries

Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires frequent travel (up to 75%) across the territory and may require stays away from home.
