Description:

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Manager of Accounting to join our team. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance, this pivotal role oversees the City’s accounting functions, including accounts payable and receivable, preparation of internal financial reports, preparation of the City’s consolidated financial statements and coordination of the annual audit. You will ensure the accuracy and timeliness of our financial reporting while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.
As the Manager of Accounting, you will lead a dedicated team of accounting staff, implement effective financial controls, and provide strategic financial insights that support the City’s goals. This position offers a complex and varied work environment, requiring considerable independent judgment in supervising accounting operations. Major issues are collaboratively discussed with a superior, ensuring robust decision-making.
In this role, you will also prepare strategic and administrative recommendations, and work closely with other managers to foster familiarity with all departmental functions and develop cross-training opportunities. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role, with significant experience in progressively responsible accounting positions, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of municipal finance, accounting, and auditing principles, practices, and systems
  • In-depth understanding of policies, procedures, by-laws, regulations, and acts governing the departments functions and operations
  • Proficiency in preparing a variety of accounting, statistical, and financial statements, reports, and returns, and interpreting and applying applicable by-laws, regulations, acts, and policies.
  • Strong knowledge of public administration practices and procedures relevant to the work performed
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with a variety of business software systems and utilizing computer data processing systems to meet the department’s needs
  • Familiarity with the functions, operations, and requirements of other finance sections and municipal departments as they relate to the accounting function
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the departments operations effectively, adhering to established deadlines and statutory requirements
  • Skill in planning, assigning, supervising, evaluating, and reviewing the work of direct reports, including motivating, mentoring, and facilitating their career development
  • Ability to initiate, review, analyze, evaluate, and implement new accounting standards, new and revised policies, procedures, and operating systems and controls
  • Ability to collaborate on strategic initiatives, policy, and operational matters related to the department.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills demonstrated through the ability to facilitate, mediate, network, research, analyze and resolve issues
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with proficiency in delivering presentations
  • Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to shifting priorities
