Mō te tūranga | About the Role
This is a Second Line Operational Risk role. The primary focus for this role is to support the independent review, challenge, and provision of advice to facilitate a strong, embedded risk culture that optimises risk / reward decision making and supports the delivery of the business’ strategic objectives.
You will also act as key support for the Senior Risk Business Partner group across all business unit portfolios.
- Encourage a strong, embedded risk culture that optimises risk/reward decision making and supports the delivery of the business’ strategic objectives.
- Support the monitoring of business risk practices, highlighting gaps and out of appetite risks and escalating as required.
- Support the oversight of risk assessments inherent in material changes e.g., key business decisions, projects, process changes, implementation of new infrastructure, product changes or transformation projects.
- Influence risk management practices that support the management of Operational Risk within appetite.
- Build strong partnerships across the Risk business to provide well-balanced, researched and appropriate advice, including views from Compliance, Credit, Assurance, Financial Crime and Governance.
- Help oversee an uplift in WNZL’s control environment including: control architecture, quality, control owner accountability, culture, capability, and end-to-end control effectiveness.
- Support risk maturity uplift in Issue and Incident management across the bank.
As this role sits within a wider team covering the Second Line ownership of Specialised Risk (Sustainability and Reputational Risk, Risk Culture and Strategic Risk) there is also an opportunity for this role to support the risk management practices and oversight related to these risk types, if aligned to development and career goals.

- Significant (4+ years) experience in a risk of compliance role within the banking or financial services industry.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to extract key information and provide practical insights / interpret and collate data in a meaningful way suitable for Risk Forum reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with, consult and advise senior management.
- Critical thinking and ability to cut through to core issues.
- Approach complex problems with fresh ideas / perspectives.
- Demonstrated ability to provide coaching for performance uplift.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across the business.
