In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Policy Stewardship Office provides stewardship of the policy process for the organization. It is responsible for ensuring Island Health policy is standardized, well referenced, and compliant with BC s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). The Policy Stewardship Office:
1) Provides stewardship and oversight for the policy process;
2) Serves as the central authority to manage and support implementation of key organizational policies; and
3) Assists with consultation and advisory services.
Reporting to the Director, Clinical Risk and Policy, the Manager, Policy Stewardship Office proactively influences the development of best practice in policy development by providing advice to leadership, programs, staff and medical staff. Activities include:
- Working effectively with the organization s stakeholders to ensure commitment of a unified approach to policy development, with guiding rules and principles;
- Working with leadership and teams to identify and develop key policy areas, including the policy inventory management strategy;
- Assembling, interpreting and analyzing information necessary for evaluating and auditing policy;
- Briefing partners and external organizations with respect to a system for document management;
- Engaging with provincial partners in community of practice for health care l policy; and
- Providing regular updates to director and executive leadership.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in a related health discipline such as Nursing, Health Information Science, or Public Administration, and a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in a health care environment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience in regional policy and practice development and leading expert working groups to meet the desired outputs.
- Knowledge of or certification in enterprise risk management considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Knowledge and skills related to clinical standards, policy development and inventory management solutions.
- Knowledgeable regarding new trends in quality and patient safety standards.
- Knowledge and practice in effective problem solving techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with operational and technical teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Change-oriented and possesses an attitude of continuous improvement.
- Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and has a demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload in a self-directed manner.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to coach, facilitate and lead others.
