If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
WHAT YOUR JOB WILL BE LIKE
We are seeking a hardworking R&D Manager (job title: Manager, R&D Science and Engineering) to lead the Radiation and Nuclear Detection Systems Department. This Department conducts research and development of ionizing radiation and rare signature detection systems to address broad nuclear security needs in support of various U.S. Government programs.
This position includes strategic responsibilities, programmatic responsibilities, and operational responsibilities. If selected, you will work with staff to set its research and development agenda, support program development, and assist in the high-quality execution of the R&D program in radiation detection. You will also ensure project and program alignment with current sponsors and work to develop emerging research areas to advance the Laboratories’ mission needs consistent with strategy and priorities. You will also support the career development of staff.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Promote laboratory-wide program development initiatives in proliferation detection, nuclear verification, nuclear incident response and WMD detection, including opportunities for realization of detection technologies through sponsors at DHS, DoD, etc.
- Develop strong, influencing relationships with management in the Global Security Division, particularly the Asset Security & WMD Response, Monitoring Systems, and Global Security & Cooperation Centers.
- Grow partnerships with DOE/NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN, NA-20), coordinated through Sandia’s designated points of contact.
- Ensure the safe execution of laboratory experiments involving hazards such as chemicals and radiation.
- Guide staff on conforming to security-related policies and practices, including becoming a Derivative Classifier to enable the timely review of documentation that results from the department’s research.
- Promote technical excellence by managing and coordinating overall program and project plans, work scope, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements.
- Cultivate a culture that is inclusive and take an active leadership role in modeling and growing values in diversity, equality, and an inclusive environment.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE
- Ph.D. in physics, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant field.
- Four years of experience relevant to radiation detection research.
- Demonstrated experience in leading or managing science-based, technically diverse teams, projects, and/or programs.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, which may require a polygraph examination.
- Ability to travel every 1-2 months as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- Externally recognized SME in one or more fields demonstrated by the radiation detection research community (e.g., nuclear physics, high-energy physics, radiation transport modeling, nuclear instrumentation, electronics engineering).
- Experience working with federal program managers at DOE, DoD, and/or DHS.
- Familiarity with DOE/NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN, NA-20).
- Proven record of publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
- Experience writing successful grant proposals.
