Description:

Manager, Risk, Resilience, & Compliance

  • This role is open to all locations however Sydney location preferable

Role summary
The role is accountable for monitoring changes to the operating environment and devising improvements to the suite of policies and frameworks to align with internal and external expectations (fit for purpose) and maintain operating effectiveness. This includes providing timely and pragmatic advice to Divisions to implement the policies.
As a secondary responsibility (where capacity allows), the role will also participate in the provision of timely, relevant, and practical risk advice to APRA’s Divisions, including (but not limited to): quality risk assessments to support decision-making, Post Incident Reviews, and activities to uplift risk awareness.
The role will also contribute to the regular reporting to key stakeholders, including: the Audit & Risk Committee, Executive Board, and Management Committee.
At APRA, the management of risks is everyone’s responsibility, and the role of the Chief Risk Office is to ensure that each of APRA’s Divisions and staff has the information, tools, and knowledge necessary to effectively manage their risks. Success is measured by the outcome (actual management of risks) and not the process (existence of frameworks, policies, registers, etc.).

Key accountabilities and outcomes

  • Continuously improve and operationalise APRA’s suite of risk management and compliance policies, including fraud, and conflicts.
  • Maintain and enhance APRA’s business continuity management practices and ensure the organisation’s resilience.
  • Continuously monitor relevant external developments and legislative changes to ensure APRA’s policies and practices remain aligned with evolving expectations.
  • Develop monitoring tools and measurements to proactively make changes in response to changing organisational maturity.
  • Managing the operational administration of APRA’s compliance and BCP functions.
  • Providing thought leadership in the areas risk management, compliance, and resilience tailored to the diverse roles and remit of each of the supervision and supervision related Divisions.
  • Establish engagements with Divisions that contribute to establishing an up to date and accurate view of key risks and the effectiveness of mitigants.
  • Contribute to activities that ensure Divisions can sustainably meet (and demonstrate) their risk, compliance, and resilience obligations.
  • Contribute to activities that embed (and continuously evolve) APRA’s risk culture.
  • Contribute to building and leading a professional team with a high level of expertise and knowledge of APRA’s operations and responsibilities, including the identification and fostering of talent throughout the team.
  • Building capability across APRA by actively sharing knowledge, training and mentoring others. Collaborates internally and externally to achieve broader APRA or industry outcomes.
  • Modelling inclusive leadership behaviours and instilling an open culture where divergent views are shared and respected.
  • Maintains an up-to-date awareness of APRA’s organisational dynamics and use this effectively in managing internal relationships and engaging stakeholders.

Desired experience and capabilities

  • A demonstrably diverse and depth of knowledge and understanding of contemporary risk management, compliance, and business continuity frameworks, concepts and practices.
  • Depth of experience in operationalising policies and frameworks into business procedures, and continuous monitoring and adjustment to their effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in building the necessary relationships and influencing stakeholders at critical decision-making junctures.
  • Demonstrated ability to comfortably work with vague information and take steps to decipher the problem and formulate a path forward.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate concisely (written and verbal) and within context (materiality) to influence decision-making at the most senior levels.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities, including the ability to organise/motivate others and drive toward milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a mentor for staff in their career progression.
  • Scans a breadth of sources to identify and raise emerging trends and identify usage within organisational context. Can distil information appropriately for different audiences.
  • Strong personal integrity and an intuitive understanding of what is reasonable and prudent business practice.
  • Ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships with peers, team members and external stakeholders in a professional team environment.
