Description:

ERM is seeking an experienced Managing Technical Consultant to play a key role in growing our business in our Calgary office or at a remote location in the region. The ideal candidate will have experience leading wetland and biological field assessments and permitting projects related to renewable energy, transmission, or other capital project developments. Solar experience is preferred. This is an excellent opportunity to advance you career with ERM’s experienced consulting teams in renewable energy permitting, with additional opportunities to contribute to onshore wind, electrical transmission, oil & gas, and technology infrastructure projects.
As a senior technical leader and project manager, you will manage permitting and/or due diligence processes, provide leadership in biological field surveys, conduct research to define permitting requirements, coordinate with relevant jurisdictions during permitting processes, develop permitting plans, and developing or coordinating permit applications. You will also participate in teams conducting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, state-level equivalent reviews, and environmental permitting for large-scale capital projects in the eastern states and beyond.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS/MS in biology, ecology, or the environmental sciences.
  • 5 to 10 years of due diligence and permitting experience, including consulting for private-sector clients.
  • High degree of technical competence and broad knowledge of biological field assessment and permitting practices, with a solid grasp of the key biological impact assessment and management issues for land development projects (e.g., wetland delineations, protected species assessment, stormwater management, and others).
  • Well-developed teambuilding and influencing skills; unquestioned integrity; and the experience, confidence, and stature to effectively address client and business needs and challenges.
  • Solid experience building sustaining relationships with major clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to seamlessly work as part of a team.
  • Excellent writing, communication, presentation, strategic thinking, and “people” skills.
  • Recognized technical expertise by and established reputation in the local marketplace, including ability to develop a positive reputation local land use staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and provide technical expertise on wetland and Waters of the region delineations, habitat assessments, and species-specific surveys. Federally permitted bat biologists strongly preferred.
  • Lead preparation of local, state, and federal permitting documents. Contribute to preparing permitting deliverables, serving in roles ranging from lead technical expert to quality review. Perform project delivery activities such as report writing, data collection and survey field work, data and literature review, and development of recommendations for clients.
  • Oversee multiple projects within client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Prepare technical proposals, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Maintain client relationships to support repeat business.
  • Collaborate with other ERM IAP practitioners to execute Impact Assessment and Permitting (IAP) projects (services within our IAP service area include environmental impact assessment, land use planning, facility siting & permitting, and risk assessment).
  • Supervise junior- and mid-level consulting staff to develop their skill sets in technical planning and permitting.
  • Be knowledgeable about current and projected projects being executed in the Capital Cities Area and larger region, in order to assist with coordination of current staff, and identification of staffing needs.
  • Understand ERM’s service areas and market strategy and participate in recruiting and interviewing efforts to build a strong and cohesive regional team.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees locally, regionally, and nationwide.
