Role Purpose:

  • To make a positive and forward looking contribution to NTGL and the international business units of Northern Trust (“NT”) comprising Global Fund Services (“GFS”) and Global Family Office (“GFO”). To also manage existing business relationships which do not fall directly within GFS and GFO including jurisdictional support of Technology functions based in Guernsey.
  • Working with regional leadership, to develop and implement a strategy specifically for the Banking, Credit, Custody Client Servicing and Depositary Departments that most effectively delivers NTGL’s corporate objectives and drives the optimum contribution to Group strategic plans leveraging location strategy, operating model and technology.
  • To work with other senior managers to ensure effective communication of strategic objectives across all business units including oversight and support to ensure resources are available to accomplish all objectives.
  • To manage all risks within agreed risk appetite and limits and continue to embed the ICAAP within all business activities.
  • To ensure NTGL meets the highest corporate governance standards and complies with all regulatory requirements.
  • To profile and protect NT/NTGL’s reputation and to position NT as an employer of choice.

Principal Responsibilities:

Strategy & Alignment:

  • Communicate the vision of Group and NTGL Board strategy to the NTGL management team covering all business units.
  • Ensure that senior management is kept fully informed of any new strategic and jurisdictional developments.
  • Develop Banking, Credit, Custody and Depositary strategies that achieve the maximum alignment with and support for the GFS and GFO growth initiatives.
  • Ensure optimal use of resources.
  • Regularly review strategy in light of current and anticipated client needs.
  • Regularly review current/anticipated market, jurisdictional and regulatory changes. Consider impact on planned strategy and communicate as appropriate.

Business Development & Profile raising:

  • Review & approve NTGL’s own independent (outside of GFS/GFO) plan to grow revenues (where applicable).
  • Ensure that NTGL fully engages to support the efforts of the Sales and Marketing team to grow new revenues.
  • Ensure that NTGL’s Custody Client Servicing team fully engages with GFS RMs\CSDMs in its attempts to grow existing business.
  • Conduct business meetings (as appropriate) with peer groups in the Guernsey Financial Centre and distribute local Call Reports.
  • Serve on local Associations and act as a consultant where appropriate on Banking/Depositary/Custody related industry issues.

Financial:

  • Monitor financial results against Plan, understand key drivers and variances. Take action as necessary.
  • Review/approve staffing requirements and resource allocation.
  • Ensure that NTGL has sufficient capital and liquidity resources.
  • Monitor client profitability, understand key drivers and variances. Take action as necessary.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Actively participate/monitor major Risk environment within the Bank i.e. ICAAP, Credit/Depositary, Treasury, Regulatory etc.
  • Ensuring the delivery of a high quality, value for money service that meets the client’s needs
  • Develop, train and motivate staff to achieve business objectives. Lead by example and promote teamwork. Guide, coach and motivate all members of the management team across multiple levels to maximise their ability to meet business objectives.
  • Develop/maintain effective channels of communication at all levels. Ensure that effective communication processes are used within NTGL, consistent with the NT’s communication strategy and standards. Ensure that all members of the Banking Group’s management team understand those objectives that are relevant to them and what they are expected to contribute towards achieving them
  • Ensure good corporate governance and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Ensure that NTGL adheres to the highest standards of corporate governance.
  • Act as Certified Person under UK Senior Manager function with responsibility for Credit and Counterparty risks for TNTC London Branch and NTGS (London Branch). Act as a Member of CI Exec Committee\CI Risk Committee\Depositary Management Group\GFI Credit Committee.

Skills and experience required:

  • Extensive banking experience including senior managerial experience.
  • Sound knowledge of banking practices, credit services, lending principles, corporate and fund structures and accounting practice.
  • Excellent understanding of Corporate governance principles.
  • Good technical ability relating to the preparation and review of complex facility and legal documentation.
  • Good understanding of investment instruments (classes of debt, equity, etc.).
  • Sound knowledge of local legal and regulatory matters across a number of financial activities, including GFSC Handbook (AML/CTF), POI, Large Exposures etc.
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills to direct the activities of multiple business units/ departments.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism at all times including attention to detail coupled with an ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage resources efficiently and effectively including good team leadership and motivational skills.
  • Able to work with others together with commitment to impart knowledge, coach and develop subordinate staff and delegate responsibility to ensure completion of certain tasks.
  • Methodical and balanced approach to demanding situations.
