The Market Analytics Specialist combines advanced modeling skills (statistical/Data/ML) with extensive market knowledge (complex environmental, macro, and microeconomic factors) into actionable intelligence that ENMAX can use to gain strategic advantages and augmented financial outcomes.
This role primarily supports the trading desk, focusing on driving value via optimization and analysis. The individual will drive the supply and demand fundamentals analysis and modeling for the Alberta electricity and North American gas markets to produce meaningful and strategic insights.
Please note: work hours for this role are from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM to align with the trading hours.
Major responsibilities:
- Subject matter expert on key environmental policies, electricity market regulations and Restructured Energy Market (REM)
- Provide high-quality insights on ad-hoc analysis projects that usually require short turnarounds
- Develop and maintain data science/predictive/valuation models (quantitative and qualitative), tools, and actionable forecasts in support of our trading, optimization, and decision-making activities
- Identify, quantify, validate and backtest commercial and trading alpha drivers and risks through scenario and sensitivity analysis
- Create and maintain a proprietary view for the natural gas and electricity markets to provide internal clients with decision-making information, focusing on driving efficiency through automation of the reporting suite
- Continuously model and evaluate natural gas market fundamentals with a focus on regional markets that impact ENMAX facilities – including but not limited to: natural gas production, demand, storage, basis differentials, pipeline flows, and competitor intelligence
- Grow to a subject matter expert on topics such as influential assumptions about future market behavior, bidding behavior, historical demand and price volatility dynamics, and drivers for change in supply and demand balances
- Accountable for interpreting data and research analysis, constructing a cohesive narrative, and clearly and concisely communicating this information to senior leadership and other internal clients
- Work with management to produce presentations for board meetings or other events as required
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to identify, communicate, and develop solutions for wholesale business issues, processes, and operations
Education required:
- Degree in Engineering, Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, Finance or other related discipline from an accredited University
Qualifications and experience:
- 5 years related industry and technical experience is required
- Strong understanding of competitive electricity market designs, production cost modeling, and capacity expansion
- Broad knowledge and experience in power and natural gas markets
- Advanced statistical modelling and/or data science skills used to help predict future market outcomes
- Proficiency with Python, Excel, SQL and VBA is required
- Experience with Azure cloud platform for analytics delivery is an asset
- Understanding of project management fundamentals is considered an asset.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
