Description:

We are looking for the best technicians in London to help us become the most reliable bus business in the capital – and are offering an excellent remuneration package for the right candidates.
We’re seeking to build on our current capability with a small group of highly motivated individuals who have an excellent technical pedigree in mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems to lead the most challenging fault finding and repairs across our bus fleet – identifying faults accurately and efficiently.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, these roles are mobile and could be working at any of our London bus depots on any given day. They will have a full set of diagnostic systems as well as a company vehicle to move between depots as the need requires. While the primary role will be to diagnose challenging faults and provide advice to the Transport UK engineering team, the successful candidates will need to be able to coach and train our existing team to pass their knowledge on – increasing our capabilities, as well as identifying staff training needs.
They will need to work collaboratively with Fleet Managers and Service Managers across all of our depots, with a focus on ‘fix it first time’. No two days will be the same!
Transport UK London Bus operates bus services across London on behalf of TFL, plus rail replacement and event services across the UK. We operate 11% of the London’s bus network, running over 900 modern high-tech vehicles and employing around 2,500 employees across six depots in Central, South and West London. We carry over 150 million customers a year on TfL’s contracted bus network – and are the fastest growing operator in the capital.

Duties will include:

  • Acting on the Head of Engineering’s instructions to support the individual depots
  • Investigating, diagnosing and recording vehicle mechanical & electronic faults
  • Carrying out repairs, inspections and maintenance on our fleet
  • Instructing other technicians to act upon faults you’ve diagnosed
  • Being able to work well using own initiative and without detailed instructions
  • Clearly documenting faults and rectification work conducted in the appropriate detail with the aid of electronic tablets
  • Confidently using modern computer systems for fleet management and diagnostics
  • Reading and interpreting instructions, schematics, wiring diagrams and service manuals
  • Challenging our suppliers to provide the right equipment if the tools, software and service manuals are incorrect/insufficient
  • Have a duty of care for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues at all times
  • Always follow safety instructions in respect of your role and the business as a whole, and report unsafe acts of omissions of safety
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the job role

All candidates must have:

  • A demonstrable track record of successfully undertaking complex fault finding
  • A minimum qualification of NVQ Level 3 standard
  • Recognised qualifications in hybrid awareness and hybrid fault diagnostics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of diagnostic equipment and its applications such as Electrical components like alternators, starter motors, electrical looms and wiring harnesses
  • Experience of working with Diagnostic Software Packages such as Cummins Insite, ACTIA, WABCO etc.
  • Skilled in the use of IT systems, including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • A full understanding/appreciation of the terms and condition of the Company Operating Licence
  • The ability to adapt and identify where their skills require updating in line with changes in bus technology
  • A willingness and ability to coach and improve others around them
  • A full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Ability to be passed fit for a PCV Driver pre-employment medical
  • IRTEC qualifications are desirable but if required, training will be given

The closing date for applications is 26 August 2024, but please note that due to a high number of applications we may close the job posting earlier than expected. Best of luck!!
