Bedrijf
Sciensano connects health, science and society and has more than 900 employees who are committed to human and animal health every day. As our name suggests, science and health are central to our mission. Sciensano’s strength lies in its holistic and multidisciplinary approach to health. Our focus is on the close and indissoluble interconnection between human and animal health, and their environment (the “One health” concept). Therefore, we combine different research perspectives to uniquely contribute to everyone’s health. For this, Sciensano builds on the more than 100 years of scientific expertise of the former Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (CODA-CERVA) and the ex-Scientific Institute of Public Health (WIV-ISP). Functiebeschrijving
Within Sciensano’s Viral Diseases Service, the National Reference Centre for measles, mumps and rubella carries out diagnoses of clinical samples suspected of infection with these diseases in Belgium. In addition, the centre is in charge of surveillance of these diseases in Belgium. Rubella and Measles are two diseases characterised by the appearance of a skin rash in infected persons. In addition, there are other viruses, which cause this such as chicken pox, fifth and sixth diseases, Epstein-Barr virus,… Diagnostics are starting to move more towards screening for different possible causative agents of the symptoms with which a patient presents (syndromic testing). This has the advantage of faster diagnosis. We therefore want to develop a test that focuses on diagnosing pathogens that cause skin rashes.
