Description:
Reporting To: Professor Fergal Malone, Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Nominee
Location: Rotunda Hospital and medical facility in the United States
Contract: 12 months, renewable, full time
Start Date: July 2025
The principal objective of the post is to complete a period of intensive, supervised instruction in the subspecialty of maternal fetal medicine, leading to approval by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists as a specialist in this field.
This post is part of an overall two or three year fellowship training programme, one year of which will be at a medical facility in the United States
Specifically the duties of this post will include:
- Undertaking clinical duties in the areas of maternal medicine and fetal medicine, as directed by the Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the Master of the Rotunda Hospital, and in compliance with the RCOG-approved training programme for this post
- Undertaking publishable research within the research facility at the RCSI Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital
- Undertaking administrative duties as requested
- An on call commitment at the Rotunda Hospital and may have an on call arrangement at other hospitals as required
- Contributing to the development and delivery of the undergraduate teaching programme in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Course facilitation and lecturing on the undergraduate teaching programme in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Overseas travel to other hospitals to develop clinical skills or to participate in the functions of the Department as requested
- Developing new programmes and research projects in association with the Head of Department
- Directing and co-ordinating specific programmes in association with the Head of Department
- Ensuring that all Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland policies and procedures are adhered to
- Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
- Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
- Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI as well as the Rotunda Hospital at all times
- Acting in accordance with the best interests of the patient at all times
- Making themselves available during the academic year to deliver these duties
- Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time.
Person Specification
- Possession of MB, BCh, BAO and MRCOG or equivalent is essential
- Completion of USMLE examinations, or clearly documented timeline for the future completion of these examinations to allow for medical practice in the US
- Previous experience of teaching and assessing students in an academic environment is desirable
- Previous experience in research, as evidenced by at least one publication in a peer reviewed journal, is desirable.
- The successful applicant should have good communication skills
Appointment: This is a temporary post for one year in the first instance with the opportunity for a further one or two years. The second year of this Fellowship is expected to be at a United States academic medical centre, such as Columbia University Medical Center, New York. A third year may be required if needed to complete a postgraduate degree such as MD or PhD.

- Garda Vetting
- Police Clearance (if in residence outside of Ireland for periods of 6 months or more at any stage)
Garda Vetting and Occ Health checks will be conducted by RCSI and partners but Police Clearance certification from countries outside of Ireland will be the responsibility of the successful candidate.
