ABOUT YOU

We are looking for career starters to join our team of consulting professionals in the Mechanical Designer / Engineer-in-Training role. If you are a holder of either a Diploma of Technology or a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, have basic skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and have a genuine interest in learning about sustainability and climate change considerations in the design of building mechanical systems, this role may be for you.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

The following qualifications, competences and experience are considered major assets:

  • Theoretical foundation from a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Background in the design of HVAC and plumbing systems, preferably in commercial and institutional buildings
  • Hands-on skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD) using AutoCAD and familiarity with Revit
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and standards
  • Familiarity with the design and performance specifications for buildings fire protection systems
  • Has strong attention to quality and detail
  • Ability to work with clients, building users, consulting engineers, project managers, contractors, and product suppliers in a professional manner and in a team environment
  • Effective reading and comprehension, oral and written communications in the English language

This is a 40-hour per week salaried position in a flexible, hybrid work environment. The salary range is $60,000 – 90,000. In determining your starting salary, we will consider your qualifications, level of experience and responsibilities, competencies, unique offering to our team, and how you compare with other team members who are in a similar position.
The role is primarily based in our main office in Burnaby, with an option to work from home on some days. The candidate must also have the ability to travel locally with occasional trips to other BC communities and provinces across Canada.

Responsibilities:

THE MECHANICAL DESIGNER / ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING ROLE

A Mechanical Designer / Engineer-in-Training (EIT) at Prism is technical designer who works under the supervision of Professional Engineers and more senior designers in performing building system analysis and upgrades. They may interact directly with clients and work collaboratively with team members coming from various engineering disciplines and third parties in order to contribute in proposing and delivering effective, design and value-adding solutions. They are in the process of acquiring general project management skills as they start to get exposed to the different project stages, namely, Requests for Proposals (RFP)s, systems analyses, design, procurement services and construction oversight.

IN THIS ROLE, YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Performing survey of existing building mechanical systems by visiting the site;
  • Providing support in designing building systems by performing various types of engineering calculations, conducting technical reviews of existing and proposed product and service specifications, and preparing drawings
  • Contributing to the preparation of tender documentation for procurement of equipment and installation
  • Conducting site reviews of construction, preparing field review reports and assisting in the preparation of deficiency reports
  • Coordinating with clients, project architect and other engineering disciplines and holding project meetings
