Description:

A Mechanical Engineer II will be responsible for assisting in the design, engineering, analysis, equipment selection, and system layout of HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related mechanical building systems for Commercial and Government facilities.

EDUCATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have graduated from an ABET-accredited 4-, 5-, or 6-year engineering program in one of the following disciplines:
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Architectural Engineering (Mechanical engineering focus)
  • Architectural Engineering Technology (Mechanical engineering focus)
  • Completed course work should include Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Dynamics core courses.
  • EIT Certification is required.
  • Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 48 months of being hired.
  • Understanding sustainable design principles and design practices and pursuing LEED AP accreditation is desirable.
  • Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to reflect personal growth in the profession and an ever-increasing knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation process
  • Active membership in NSPE, ASHRAE, ASPE or other related professional organizations is desirable.
  • Ability to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, and information management.
  • Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of REVIT modeling software.
  • Up to 7 years of specific, post-graduation, mechanical engineering experience that includes experience with designing HVAC systems, including designing and sizing ductwork distribution and piping systems and equipment sizing, development of construction documents (drawings and specifications), coordination with other design team members, and experience in responding to construction phase queries and submittals. Three or more years of experience following graduation is preferred.
  • Experience and a working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. Work area is lighted, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight. Responsibilities:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Performing various aspects of mechanical engineering design as directed by more experienced engineers or designers, including conceptual studies, program requirements, design analysis, calculations, equipment selection and layout, and system selection and layout for building design, upgrades, and retrofits.
  • Meeting with clients
  • Coordinating and communicating with design team members to ensure that mechanical design details integrate properly with all other disciplines represented on the design team.
  • Complying with the firm’s quality control policies and procedures
  • Learning and implementing department and company standards.
  • Developing design and analysis skills
  • Preparing project programming, schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents.
  • Providing support services during the bidding process, i.e., preparing addenda, amendments, open bids, tabulate bids, etc.
  • Providing construction phase services including representing the firm on-site, answering requests for information, reviewing shop drawings, preparing record drawings, etc.
  • Coordinating with building commissioning professionals as required
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from senior engineers, project managers, managing principals, and operations directors.

PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Perform Engineer or Senior Engineer tasks as directed.
  • Responsible for document organization and clarity
  • Responsible for discipline drawing coordination
  • Assisting with preparation of fee proposals for mechanical design work as directed
  • Drafting of marked-up plans, partial plans, sections, details.
  • Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Engineer.
  • Creating schematic-level plans and details for projects of moderate to high complexity
  • Developing an accurate, three-dimensional model of the mechanical systems with the necessary level of detail using the required Building Information Modeling (BIM) software package, when BIM is a project requirement.
  • Develop design options for resolution of system conflicts.
  • Assist with building systems calculations and LEED templates.
  • Participate in building system selections.
  • Participate in building code analysis process.
  • Participate in development of discipline specifications.
  • Coordinating work product with other disciplines
  • Adhere to project schedule and budget.
