QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Leaving Certificate, three (3) years power or industrial plant experience in the repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical equipment.
Formal technical or apprentice training in two or more fields of electricity, welding, mechanical, millwright, plumbing or machining is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge in the safe and proper use of hand tools, meters, lathes, drill presses, cutting torches, rigging, etc.

Formal training in the safe use of fork trucks, MEWP’s, hoists, etc. is preferred. Working knowledge of boilers, steam turbines and material handling equipment would be advantageous.

  • Trade qualification in a discipline relevant to the field of work.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Excellent English, both written and verbal communication. Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, technical procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and other procedure manuals. Ability to speak and communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees of the organization. Ability to write and fill out forms.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Welding, electrical, or machinist certifications desirable.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to take appropriate safe action on his/her own initiative to prevent equipment damage or injury to personnel during emergencies or unusual situations.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform various inspections, maintenance and repair work as assigned using proper safety practices.
  • Inspect, adjust, rebuild, laser align, balance and level pumps, fans and other rotating machinery as required, performing this work personally or under the instruction of the Lead Mechanic if necessary.
  • Perform welding repairs, such as repair welded piping, and installations using steel plate and work platforms.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on all plant mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and correct mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical problems and complete all maintenance work records for the Maintenance Manager.
  • Work closely with the Lead Mechanic in the training of electrical and mechanical skills.
  • Active participation of plant shutdown work including tear down and inspection of all mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical plant equipment.
  • Requires being on call and working overtime based on plant needs.
  • Assist the warehouse and operations personnel when necessary.
  • Keeps work area in a clean, safe and orderly condition. Performs plant and shop housekeeping chores.
  • Follow all company procedures and safety policies.
  • Support all on-site safety and quality initiatives.
  • Complete qualifications to become a Lead Mechanic.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Maintenance Manager
